That's not the point. The point is everybody knew Qc had to trade Lindros. They were in position of weakness, and they still got a very good deal for him.

they had the player who was highly accepted as the top player of his generation which barring injuries wasn't far off. he was 18 years old and years removed from free agency.
that players was in another class.
that's like saying the pens would be in a position of weakness had crosby opted to ask for a trade after the draft. they would have gotten anything from anyone.

The player chooses to go to arbitration, but the team decides the term. Habs chose 1 year.
