Bergevin is paid to put as good a hockey team on the ice as he can. that includes Subban being here long term. there is no"plan" to sign him for one year, save money, and then lock him up next year. because you're just going to pay a higher AAV next year anyway.

Keeping PK's salary in check will allow MB to ice as good a team on the ice as he can.

He loves golf.

Why would he want to stay on a team that makes the playoffs?

PK will sign 9M per over 8 years.

Exactly. That being said, if you take PK's point of view, why would he not wait a year or two before signing long term? He knows the cap is going north!
So if you're MB and want to sign him long term right now, it will cost you a lot. Like 9.5M per. As ridiculous as it may sound...

Exactly. After stringing him along a second time there is no way they sign PK cheaper in a year or two than they would this year. He's not going to go for the low side of the market, or a team discount. They will either have to pay him what the dumbest GM would give him as a UFA or whatever ridiculously massive offer sheet he gets. Like the one the Flyers gave Weber after the Preds took him to arbitration.

No way they don't match. He's the best dman we have in over 30 years. He'll be a Habs for a long time IMO.

Ah, so this is MB brilliant plan to get 4 more mid to late 1st round picks! Got it, now it makes sense.

There is a reason nobody ever takes the picks.

Who's the last RFA (2 years from ufa) that signed a 8.5M per season for 8 years deal in the NHL?

Exactly. They'll just be matching at an average annual salary of $10 million+ instead of $8.5.

He's asking for 8.5 in arbitration. For 2 years.
Which would lead him to be UFA, asking for whatever the hell he wants at that moment.

He wouldn't sign for 8.5 long term is what I understand right now.

They said it would cost 4 1st round picks like that was going to make a difference. I was being sarcastic.

True, just like Eller was asking for 3.1M and got 3.5M long term.
Like I said, just sign him 8 years. Who cares if it's 8.5, 9, or 9.5M? The longer you wait, the more you will pay anyway...
