so then you completely support PK holding out for that deal then.

It's not a question of supporting one side or the other. PK can do whatever he wants. The best for him is to sign 5 years IMO.

Why? that only ensures you'll be breaking the bank for a 30 year old defenseman on a long term contract down the road...

From the habs perspective, you're looking at 8 years for $72M today...in 5 years from now (if he keeps up the level of play) as a UFA he'd get a lot more than that...likely the equivalent f $11M or $12M in today's money (meaning likely more if cap keeps going up).

Plus, think about it...that's a long term contract for a 30 years old...he'll have 3 or 4 prime years left and then you are still paying to dollar on his decline...

- TouenneTiiTree

Because there's no guarantee where he will be in 5 years. If it doesn't work out you can lose or trade him. If it works out, you resign him another 8 years, but you lower his final years as he gets in his late 30s so the cap hit isn't as bad.

Not everything is black and white... there are shades of gray.

I'd like the habs to be able to sign him, I think he should be paid handsomely, but I also don't want that contract crippling the team...

I think I am more on the management side for this issue...but I don't want to see PK leave.

if you sign him long term now, you have cost-certainty across the majority of his prime... Plus if he falters in 2 or 3 years and you want to move on from that investment, he'll still be young enough that other teams would take a chance on him.

no what i mean is, if you see all of the reasons why Mtl wouldn't want to sign that deal, then you see all the reasons that PK would. and being on one side... meh. if Subban wants to be a Hab, and Bergevin wants him, they'll get something done. if it doesn't work out, obviously one of the parties wants a split.

I wonder if both sides just have huge negotiating gonads, and are waiting to see how the hearing goes before adjusting their stand on the contract offers that have been made so far.
