Is there any analysis available as to why they wouldn't have just offered him the big contract?

there's no evidence that the club didn't offer him a big contract. it's possible they offered something like 8 years, $68 million and PK turned it down. i think it more comes down to one side being unreasonable, we just don't know which one.

true, but it's not like that ended smoothly. the Predators had to end up signing a ridiculous contract on Philadelphia's terms.
