Why give him all the money in the world now when you can still save a bit and have the power to do so ? - WaterBoy
because if he has to go through arbitration and does only sign for one year, despite winning a Norris*, he's much more likely to feel disrespected. He's also more likely to say...well...ok...I may as wait just one more year and get 30 teams bidding for me. |

Less now means more later...and later other players will need more money too...
It makes sense to sign him now at whatever that price is than to pay 10 to 15% more in a year or two.
how's that for stupid?

This respect thing is as stupid as the class thing.
All BS.
PK let's his agent do the dealing and he'll show up to camp ready to be the Habs best player.
Funny how people perceive negotiating as a way to lose respect.
Most places in the world, negotiating will garner more respect between both parties once a deal is reached. |

Never said that at all.
I just think signing him for only 1 year now doesn't make a lot of sense. |

It doesn't.
But it buys time for Montreal to come up with a long term deal. |

No it's not.
he's still got 2 years to go before he becomes a UFA. - WaterBoy
There is a reason teams don't do this with their top players, it doesn't end well.
He might sign in those 2 years, but only for $10 million a year or more. Because some GM will give him that as a UFA. And with only one year to wait for it he'll have all the leverage. And after the Canadians using their leverage on him repeatedly, I doubt he'll be shy about using it on them. |

it's actually quite the opposite.
It's only in the western world that a win-win solution is viewed as a successful negotiation outcome.
In most other places such as Asia, the middle-east, etc, leaving anything on the table is viewed as disgrace and the aim of any negotiation is to crush the other party. I other words, to disrespect him. |

Bet he's dying to play in Edmonton. That's why a deal isn't reached yet between him and Montreal. |
