If this was the case, it would have taken 3 minutes for them to say "lets meet in the middle at 8.25/yr" and avoid this arbitration bullpoop.

at this point yes but looking at the history of the salary cap the last few years and seeing as there are already a couple of guys who passed the 10M mark it might be tough to convince him of that.
