Someone else obviously chose him because Nolan doesn't do anything.

Sure!

After serving as an assistant coach in Pittsburgh until 1997, he took a similar position with the Colorado Avalanche, where he won his seventh career Stanley Cup in 2001. He was named as head coach of the New York Rangers in 2002, much to the ire of Islander fans. However, his brief stint with the Rangers lasted only 54 games, slightly longer than the halfway mark of the season. In addition to receiving criticism from Isles fans who labeled him a traitor, he drew the rage of Ranger fans as well, who felt he misused his offensively gifted players such as Eric Lindros and Pavel Bure by having them play the neutral-zone trap (a defensive tactic used to slow down the opponent, but also limiting the user's offensive chances). At the time of his dismissal at the hands of general manager Glen Sather, Bryan Trottier had coached 54 games with the New York Rangers and the team had a record of 21–26–6–1 and a winning percentage of 45.4%.

everybody was playing the trap in 01. the really free-wheeling river boat gamblers were playing the left wing lock.

Usually the news/discussion is: "The coach made a good hire for assistant coach" or "The Coach made a bad hire for assistant coach"

Here, it's simply: "The coach made A hire for assistant coach"

He's not a HOF coach, HUGE difference.

He has little coaching experience, too. We have no idea if Trots can coach or not.

So all those years as an assistant don't count ?

Trottier, began his coaching career as an assistant for the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1994 - 1997. The following season he served as head coach of the Portland Pirates, the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals. Trottier then spent the next four seasons as an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche, earning his seventh Stanley Cup ring when the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2001. On June 6, 2002, he was named the 30th head coach in New York Rangers history.

So the most recent coaching experience he has was 12 years ago. Great. Sounds like he was in high demand the last decade plus.

Maybe he can coach but its far from certain.

He has been Islander director of player development since 2006 . So it has not like he has been out of the game.

And they have been so good over the last 8 years.

LikeI said, maybe he can coach. BUT, I just think people are impressed because he is a "big name" in the hockey world more so than he is actually a good hockey coach.

How much competition is their for assistants?

I can't remember the last time teams were fighting over assistant coaches to hire them as assistants

They have some good prospects that are in their system . He left another position to come here . Granted it was the Islanders . But it is not like he was homeless standing in a soup line .

Good question. Assistants dont get paid much and do a lot of work.
