Overachievers has a bit of a negative connotation to me. In my mind it means "this player's not so good, but they'll have a good year", so it limits the choice to "scrubs".

I know the team is filled with said scrubs after a year like last year, I just protest your verbiage, good sir.

Yeah it would be easier to see Girgenson score 10 or 15 , which would be overachieve, as opposed to seeing hodgson or ennis score 30.

You think Girgensons scoring 10 or 15 is him overachieving? Or am I reading this wrong??

Girgensons actually has an uncanny ability to make space for himself and get into scoring position. The problem is that, at least for now, he's got hands of stone.

Well, he had 8 goals last year. I'd like to see him get about 15 this year. I think he's got a great learning curve and he's willing to drive to the net. I think once his development is done, he'll be a 20ish goal scorer. Maybe like 50 points, because like you said, he's good at creating space for himself.

Honestly, he's never going to be an offensive juggernaut, but where he lacks the actual skill, he more than makes up for it with the amount of passion he plays the game with.

Have to agree with all this. Think he ends up a 45-50 point guy most seasons with maybe one 60 pt career year. Solid producer, worker, and leader. Just hope people don't expect too much offensively.

I think 60 is way too high. I see 30-40 yearly average. 10-20 Goals and Assists per year.

60 Points would put him with the likes of JVR, ROR, Pominville, Hossa, Pacioretty. etc.

IMO he has nowhere near the offensive ability as the above mentioned. He will be a Jordan Staal type guy. Great 2-way center, not a great point producer.

I think he can get somewhere in the 30+ assist range. He's great at creating space for himself and his linemates. I'm not saying it's going to happen this year, or even next, but in his prime I think that's what we'll see. In the end, I think he'll be a very comparable player to what we had in Peca.

I'm also looking at the downward trend in the NHL in scoring right now, and I just don't see it.

I love the compete and the attitude towards the game, but I picture him as a 20/20 guy.

If playing on line 3, he is going to have line mates that are not the best at putting the puck in the net, but are more geared towards shutting down the offense of the opponent.

Assuming the Sabres get another offensive stud or 2 in next year's draft, Girgensons will most likely be able to hit the 40-50 point mark when everyone hits their prime. Think back to 2006 and 2007 when Paul freaking Gaustad had 36 points in 2007-2008 (the prior two years he missed games due to injury or he most likely would have hit that as well). Girgensons has much more offensive talent than Gaustad ever did.

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets time on the 2nd PP unit though too, so you have to take that into account. He's willing to park himself in front of the net and take a beating, so he's gonna get some garbage type goals. I think 40 pts will be around what he gets. Hell, he had 22 this year alone on a team that couldn't score worth a damn and he was only 19 years old.

I may or may not have a Girgensons third jersey.

The only thing though is in 07-08 scoring was still up in the NHL. It is trending downward and has decreased almost a full PPG since then.

Powerplay opportunities per game have been trending down along with it. Last season tied historic lows.

I also noticed last year the refs complete unwillingness to put teams on a 5-3.

Peters was talking about Game 6 of that series this morning. It made me very sad.

I don't completely disagree with you, still too soon to know how he will turn out. I personally see him being more like a Ryan Callahan or Dustin Brown. Probably closer to Callahan's numbers
