Trades are coming, we are at max contracts as well. - Yeti1181
They have 3 "sliders" so they are only at 47 contracts I believe |

Max contracts:
Teams have four different “roster” limits to balance under the league’s regulations; a 20-player “dressed list” for games, a 23-player active NHL roster, a 50-contract maximum, and a 90-player maximum reserve list.
Starting with the largest and working our way down, teams are only allowed to have up to 90 players on its reserve list, whether signed to a standard player contract (SPC) or unsigned. From there teams are only allowed to have up to 50 players signed to contracts for any given season, including those for the players on the active roster and injured reserve lists. The unsigned players are draft picks of the club who have not yet been signed. In most cases, an organization retains an unsigned drafted player’s rights for two seasons after his drafted year, with some extended timeframes provided for US College players and for European players, among others, but that’s for another topic later on.
Every player on the 23-person active NHL roster, plus any player on the injured reserve list, must be under contract (and count toward the 50 contract maximum) and every team must have at least 24 players and three goaltenders under an SPC. Beyond those parameters, a team has wide latitude to make up its 50 contracts. In actuality, most teams opt not to use the full 50-contract maximum to give the organization the flexibility to make roster moves – trades, waiver claims, or player signings – at any given time. Most teams carry a significant number of signed players at the minor professional level, AHL being the highest minor pro league in North America. Since these players are already signed to contracts, it’s easy for clubs to recall the player(s) to the NHL as needed.
Other players may be signed to contracts but returned to the player’s junior club – most often this takes place between an NHL club and Canadian Major Junior teams (teams that play in the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, or Western Hockey League, collectively the CHL). But 18 and 19-year-old players assigned to their team in the CHL do not count against the 50-contract maximum, until they have played at least 11 NHL games in one season. - Iggysbff

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Leafs let Gardiner walk and sign somebody like Brian Lee to fill out that speedy role. |

I apologize if I'm repeating anyone's else's comments or beliefs as I have not read any of thecomments yet. I truly believe the Leafs are aiming for bottom 5 with all of these mediocre signings. Sure we've improved the 3rd and forth lines (maybe) not to any degree that guarantees a play off spot though. every player signed could be better OR worse than their previous season. Injuries WILL be a factor for several players (Robidas, Bernier, etc) and all of these 1 and 2 year deals indicate a HUGE amount of money coming off the books by the time Stamkos is a UFA. SO worst/best case scenario: injuries and mediocre free agent SHORT term signings lead to high draft pick, contracts expiring, and trading away $$$ at the deadline and another cap increase. That equates to : AWESOME DRAFTpick next year (possibly first?) And lots of money to spend on an amazing UFA. Us fans can only hope and pray. |

The Leafs will be contending for a playoff spot. Anybody hoping for a top 5 pick are just as bad as the people hoping for a Stanley cup. |

lol. He was very adamant about it. If it doesn't happen he wont be able to post again or he'll be mocked mercilessly... - Iggysbff
I think he was pretty much spot on. Also leafs only have 3 mil cap space, but thats with 17 forwards.
Orr down, Ashton (2 way deal) down, Smith down, Granberg up.
4.6 million space, 22 man roster, with only Gardiner left to sign. |

Winnik played 15+ mins on a great team, and led their forwards in SH ice time. how is it a mediocre signing at 1.3? Is it wrong to have depth? |

We ve complete revamped our bottom six and now have a fourth line that can actually play hockey. Our biggest problem was us giving up so many shots because we were in our own end all the time that's not our d's fault that was because our lines couldn't force the play at the other end. We should be greatly improved in those areas. |

They wanted toughness. Someone who can win puck battles around the boards. Someone to clear the net. Someone to hit. And hit well. I think they want what Fraser brought to the team in the lockout shortened season. |

I don't think they are trying to get a bottom 5 finish. But if they do? Sweet. We can only hope this is their plan. But alas, we're Leaf fans. We know exactly what happens where there's a legit star who hits UFA status. This team is filled with the results of that. |

I don't get why people are upset that we are getting good bottom six players on good deals. Would they prefer we gave them multi year deals? |

I agree. Our defense was not very good last year. But people only blame the defensemen. A big part of it was the forwards not coming back. And the lack of depth in our lineup played a huge roll. The new additions should help the defense and possession. I think Hawerchuk should also help with the crappy system we had. |
