IMO, Coburn is superior to all those listed when it comes to shutting down other team's best players.
If I'm looking for offense I may take Wiesniewski, Phanuef or Carlson, but that's not going to make the Flyers a better team.
Gardiner has a long ways to go before a coach can even think of trusting him to match up against top players in the league. I like Hamonic, he's close, but he's not there yet. - Baxter27
I think Carlson is a better overall defender than Coburn. Alzner may be, as well.
I think Wiesnieuski (butchered that name, I'm sure) is about on par with him, a bit better offensively but not as good defensively. And I think Phaneuf's all-around game is better than Coburn's.
Like I said, I'm viewing this in a vacuum, not based on cap hit/term/team construction.
As for Gardiner, I have a man crush on him even though I know his limitations, so...yeah. |

What are you talking about? I never suggested that Schenn hasn't played a lot of wing at the NHL level. I want him at wing. In fact I've seen more penalty killing time then Brayden Schenn has since he broke his foot during his first full Rookie season. One would suggest you have to be a decent defensive forward to be on the PK. - SuperSchennBros
You'd think so, but one person on here (who I think it still banned) was adamant that all you need to be a good PKer is to "skate hard." |

So, with all the hoopla on Ghost and maybe even Morin coming in and demanding a roster spot (based on play, not verbally), does anyone think Alt is more or less a dark horse to get a spot? He doesn't get all the attention of those two, but he's probably the most well-rounded of the young guys and has a full season+ of pro experience. |

I've been beating the "Don't forget about Alt" drum for a long time. I have a hunch he's going to turn into a solid player.
We basically got him for free too. Wasn't that the Boucher thing? |

No, but she's well aware that I'd leave her for Bruce Campbell and possibly for Shea Weber. |

It was Boucher + Alt for Luke Pither. So, yes. |

Alt is going to control the play with his stick and delete the opposition with his body. |

If Alt proves to be a top 6 defenseman, they won't hesitate to keep him up. I feel morin and ghost need to blow the doors down to make the nhl roster. |

Agreed. However, we already have 7 "NHL defensemen" on the roster. Who do you demote/healthy scratch for him?
Timonen - roster spot locked up
Coburn - roster spot locked up
Streit - roster spot locked up
AMac - better have a damn roster spot locked up
L. Schenn - most likely roster spot locked up
Grossmann - possible.
Schultz - healthy scratch |

And he'll shift the puck up the ice when clearing the zone. |

Schultz will likely be 7th dman no matter what. I think Hexy would move someone. He made the statement earlier saying it's not hard to move a top 6 dman. Easier said than done I guess |

Unless you are Zac Rinaldo...big part of why Schenn isn't on the PK is that the Flyers have several very good PK forwards. Couturier, Read, Hall, Talbot before he was traded, Raffl, Giroux...again, what does that have to do when discussing Laughton?
Both Schenn and Laughton might end up as LW this season |

If Vinny is still here, which I assume he will be, you'll most likely see Schenn slotting onto a top-6 wing with VL centering the second line. I see some sort of:
Schenn - Giroux - Voracek
Raffl/Akeson - VL - Simmonds
Laughton/Raffl - Couturier - Read
more or less. |

True, but beginning of the season is the worst time to move a D. |
