you can't waive rights in a contract based on circumstances that occur after its signed.
what if a player has a NMC and won't waive it? technically the team could make his life so miserable that he's force to request a trade?
GMs know what they're getting into. - dt99999
That's why you should formalize the process (a signed addendum to the contract).
If a player as a NMC and the GM makes life miserable on him, he can always file a grievance...no?

what constitutes "asking for a trade"?
what if the agent goes to the GM and says so-and-so is wondering if there's an chance for him to go to a contender?
it leaks out as it often does.
SO AND SO ASKED FOR A TRADE?
the NTC is in the contract. black and white.
if the GM doesn't like he he should pass on it. if it's a deal-breaker then it's up to him to see if the player is worth that deal. - dt99999

You can if it's a clause in your contract.
And as far as GMs making it miserable.... I really don't see this happening, especially with social media now. A player could come out to the media and the GM would be so much under fire. - l3ig_l2ecl
not really. poop leaks all the time and media can twist whatever their sources give them
look at Alfredsson. he was the bad guy at the beginning until the story came out then the team looked like poop and nobody still knows what happened. |

that's the dumbest thing I've ever read.
so a player could ask for a trade but until he signs the addendum he hasn't really asked for it? |

You include in the original contract, that if the player requests a trade, his NTC is nullified.
That's not really complicated as a concept. |

two things...
1) a FORMAL trade request with paper work to back it up from the player's camp
2) totally agree with the bolded...but somehow people think (and GMs aren't denying) that the NTC is given because there's a gun on their heads and it's the ONLY way to sign players nowadays... |

NTC is like money
you offer $4M, the other team offers $4M + NTC
you offer $4M, the other team offers $5M
no gun to anyone's head to match

If a player with a NTC is traded they do lose the provision after the trade, I believe. |

correct. it's a very simple concept. in theory.
in practicality, it's nonsense. because as dt mentioned, the entire process of "demanding a trade" will become this greyish/hazy sequence of events where no demand is made but preferences are communicated from one party to another.
at the end of the day, the club still has a malcontent player to deal with and unload, and a limited number of teams on which to unload him. |

they do want to be traded. they were just contractually given a measure of control over the destination. |

Make it so that a GM cannot trade a player with a NTC until the paper is signed. Make it so that a player can only be traded if he signs the paper.
So players would no longer ask to be traded, or if they want out so bad, it's none of their businesses where they go.
I don't see what's complicated with this.
You can claim a GM will make his life miserable. What's he gonna do? Cut his ice time? Bench him? Well the reason he's wanting a trade is because that probably already happened. If the GM wants to trade him, it's probably because he's not performing. |
