So, when is the next lock-out?
Seriously...you all know we are headed there... - TouenneTiiTree
I hated the full year lockout, and the half year lockout, but I must say that everyone of them has somehow made the game more satisfying to watch and follow.
Now that it's 50/50, I think the next CBA will concentrate on "no trade clauses". I sure hope so. I don't see the owners going for a larger share. |

they will need to fix something, 3rd liners will be making too much to fill a 23 man roster, unless you have 8-9 ELC on your roster |

Why would you hope so? Stop giving no trade clauses to everyone and it won't be a problem...
the only thing I would like to see on the NTC and NMC is that, as player, if you request a trade, you essentially void that clause. Maybe it gets "re-instated" for your new club, but you can request out of a place, but then say only to a few places. So you formalize the whole process...you have a limited NTC, your team can move you to those approved teams. You REQUEST a trade, you have to fill out paperwork which waives your NTC/NMC until your initial team moves you. |

As long as they come up with a clause that states the NTC is void as soon as they ask for a trade I'll be happy.
It's ridiculous how players can hold their team hostage by demanding a trade and then refusing to waive to go to certain teams a la Spezza, Kesler, Lu. |

you could stop giving them out but players use them as leverage in negotiations, if they did not exisit it would make for a better league |

No...it would save bad GMs from themselves.
Stop pandering to everyone's childish little needs...plenty of players got traded over the history of the NHL...(frank), Wayne Gretzky got traded...now you have to include a NTC to a checking 3rd line center?
(frank) him, find the next guy in line willing to sign a contract without that NTC...

Players want control of their fate. It's a negotiating tool that GMs can rarely go against as players can use it as a deal breaker.
I agree, I think if a player requests a trade, the NTC should be voided. I think the NHL can still allow this, but they need to help set guidelines.
Maybe say a player making less than x amount cannot be eligible for a NTC, or a NTC can only be for the first 4 years of a contract.
IMO, this is something owners will go after. |

I hope that doesn't happen... Owners (and fans) complain when players try to get more money...yet it would be ok for owners NOT to have binding contracts?

This is very arbitrary and can lead to confusion, loopholes and mass pandemonium.
Of course, this means it will be the course of action chosen by the NHL... |

That I agree. I don't mind guaranteed contracts. However, I think if you under perform and no longer work for the team, you should be able to get traded. Which is why I hate NTCs.
I get why they don't want to get traded. They start a life in a town, friends, comfort, etc...
To me, I see it exactly like construction in Quebec and the Army.
Why the (frank) do they get 2 weeks off during the best time to do construction?? If you wanted off during the summer, become a (frank)ing teacher.
In the Army, they make you sign a contract. You go where they tell you to go. |

you can't waive rights in a contract based on circumstances that occur after its signed.
what if a player has a NMC and won't waive it? technically the team could make his life so miserable that he's force to request a trade?
GMs know what they're getting into. |

You can if it's a clause in your contract.
And as far as GMs making it miserable.... I really don't see this happening, especially with social media now. A player could come out to the media and the GM would be so much under fire. |

what constitutes "asking for a trade"?
what if the agent goes to the GM and says so-and-so is wondering if there's an chance for him to go to a contender?
it leaks out as it often does.
SO AND SO ASKED FOR A TRADE?
the NTC is in the contract. black and white.
if the GM doesn't like he he should pass on it. if it's a deal-breaker then it's up to him to see if the player is worth that deal. |
