It's not the stats it's the holier than thou attitude the nerds bring along with it. - dbell646
I can agree that there are obnoxious members of the advanced stats crowd (despite claims that literally nobody in the advanced stats crowd goes on just the numbers), but there are plenty of obnoxious "the numbers are useless when they don't confirm my beliefs" anti-stats writers and fans as well. |

Am I wrong or is that not an old Pens jersey? To be honest, it completely creeped me out when I saw it.
I'm a Pens fan from back in the day (Ron Francis, John Cullen, Tom B, etc.). I had a fake NHL contract from them when I was a kid (NHL Promo thing) that I thought was the best thing ever. |

What about those damn obnoxious members of the in-between, middle ground road that can't pick a side! Everybody in those first two groups can't stand them! |

I've zero problem with the new stat guys, it would be nice to have one of those Dummy books about it though. Took baseball nearly 30 years to fully grasp it. When it started in baseball most everyone ignored it and Beane has made a living out of it.
In Spalings case I've watched him more than most Pens fans. The advanced stats don't apply with the player he is. |

That was all I needed to here to draw my own conclusion.
By the way...can you expand on his net-front presence? Does he stand in front of the goalie and cause problems/deflections...or just another sneaky guy that bangs in a rebound every now and then? Confusing question but I think you know what I mean.. |

I get that stats tell a story, but it's just part of the story. There are other numbers that have me excited for Spaling. His ranking in the top 30 in turnover +/- ratio....highest Penguins last year was Sutter at #69. I like the fact that he played 71 games, averaging 13 minutes of even strength TOI, yet was only on the ice for 39 goals. My point is that possession stats don't tell the whole story. I take the word of a Preds fan who has nothing but good things to say about him with as much weight as the stats show. |

My angle on that is he is the type of player that would excel in that spot. Dino's probably not the best example, I was providing a quick example. More accurately would be a Malone type, without skating in molasses. He is the type that will stand there and bang them in. On PP I say 20 plus goals for the season. |

So this isn't saying Spaling can't or won't succeed, but instead saying that for his role we would have been better off signing Moss and Winnik(just examples)?
If that is the case I can buy that, but at the same time doesn't that sort of take away from what has been the key to recent champions? IE using young role players with better potential upside in those roles instead of players who just fill those roles? There are always a few players that are the exception, but Chicago, LA, and to an extent Boston had young players with upside filling in their third line roles.
What about shot production? I know his shooting % was at 15% the last two seasons, but he didn't take a lot of shots compared to what we have seen from our consistent 3rd line players over the past few years.
Spaling 1.2 shots per game
Kennedy 1.8
Staal 2+
Even Cooke was around 1.4 shots per game in his Penguin career. (Although his 11/12 season boosted those totals)
Does Nashville's conservative system limit his shot production? Does more shots in a more uptempo system help offset the possible regression in shooting%? |

Be careful with those real time stats the NHL keeps like hits, giveaways, takeaways, blocked shots, etc... They aren't kept accurately from rink to rink.

Found this Heat Map of Spaling's goals last season.

Ryan posts links all the time. Today included. I very much wish someone came up with a way for these stats to be tracked throughout the junior levels. Those of us involved in the ADM would benefit greatly from the info. |

I think in the next few years you will start to see that. There are already some people that do it independently I believe. |

Where do you get your data?
I get my data from the play by play, shift/TOI tables, and event summaries that are posted on NHL.com for every game. You can find these pages by going to a box score for a game at NHL.com and clicking on the links under "Official Game Reports".

Data sources
Raw data for NHL statistics comes from the NHL, largely from each game's play-by-play and shift reports. Here's an example play-by-play report and shift report. Raw data for Olympics stats and World Junior Championship stats is from the IIHF. Raw data for CHL stats is from the three CHL leagues.
