Greater Chicago is like 9.5, whereas the GTA is 5.5
- golfingsince

And the Golden Horseshoe is 10M+...let's be honest, there are no breaks between municipalities along the QEW west of Toronto.

Toronto is Canada's largest city, the fourth largest in North America, and home to a diverse population of about 2.8 million people. It's a global centre for business, finance, arts and culture and is consistently ranked one of the world's most livable cities.

- lumlums

Exactly, Toronto proper has a higher population, the Greater Chicago area has a higher population than the GTA.

And its incorrect. That's metro areas. Vancouver isn't even on there.

Greater Chicago area is almost 10 mill....

so not the GTA vs Chicago metropolitan area, just the city
- Pea-Brain

I'm looking forward to the GTA Maple Leafs squaring off against the Chicago Metropolitan Area Blackhawks next year in an epic market matchup...who the hell cares? It's true. There was a link. Geez.

I've long forgotten the original argument - and for the record there is a 0.001% chance Stamkos leaves TB at his next contract - but I believe it centred around SS being able to attract a greater $ in endorsements due to the media exposure in Toronto. He'd catapult no doubt to the top if he ever did sign here, but realistically that's not happeneing. Let's not forget the GTA is the 4th largest market in North America behind Mexico City, LA and NYC...people around here may not like that fact, but a fact it is.
- Deeps27

LOL, what does the size of the GTA matter? Nobody cares how big Toronto is or how much the Leafs spend. Toronto is still a mediocre city and the Leafs are one of the worst teams in the league. There's nothing about Toronto or the Leafs that draws free agents there. Look at how much they have to over pay guys to play there.

To be honest has eklund looked at are salary cap ? How could we take dion! The leafs would need to take Matt carle bret Connolly! To make it work! Because put it to rest your not getting stamkos unless he hit FA in 2016! Which I doubt! He would be dump not to lock his money up a year before FA! He won't take the chance! Injury could happen! Yzerman extends him July 2015! 12 million a year for 8 year term!

It's close, but TO overtook Chicago last year. But as said, the greater Chicago area is higher than the GTA.
- Canuckleafer

Yup, if you apportion the area of "Chicago" to be larger than that of over 100 of the world's countries

My point is where do you stop? I couldn't care less about what market is bigger give or take a couple hundred thousand people - do I need to provide stats that supports that it is likely that regardless the market size of Toronto/Chicago an NHL player is likely to attract more endorsement dollars in Toronto? It is a pretty easy conclusion to draw based on competition for endorsement dollars alone. No NFL and the Raptors don't have the cache of the Bulls, let alone two MLB teams, etc.
