I don't think Kane is going to be a super star either, but people (not saying you) do seem to forget that Kane and B Schenn are the same age. Kane has a 30 goal season under his belt (albeit many more NHL games than Schenn). I think Kane has the potential to hit 40 goals if he plays with the right center.

Bottom line is what you already said. Asking price is just too high at this point.

- mcefalu

I'm not saying I don't like Kane, but I feel that the return relative to the cost is very prohibitive. Schenn actually had more goals that Kane last year (in 19 more games) with an ever-changing array of linemates. I feel that Schenn could reach 27-30 goals next year on Giroux's wing, which I think would be just fine.

I believe that B Schenn is only going to get better and VL is only going to get worse. Personally, I would leave VL on the 4th line unless his play warrants a promotion up the depth chart.

I won't say never, but if his skating is still an issue and he posts the same kind of numbers this year...I don't think he will be easy to trade, even then.

If his skating is what it is and the injury didn't cause it...he will be here unless the Flyers buy him out, I feel

- AllInForFlyers

That's kind of why I'm wondering if it is almost worth it to just buy him out now. According to cap geek, it would be 1.5 mill against the cap per year. That's a lot of money for four years, but he doesn't fit into Berube's system, and it would allow him to go elsewhere. I realize we lose his potential 20 goals, but I would hope that could get made up from a good season from B Schenn and others (Akeson maybe?)

Your boy Chris butler scored only a two way contract. Was that a steal?
- Just5

Scouting Report:

You'd be really hard-pressed to determine which player they were describing... Butler or Amac (hint: it's Butler). Their games are virtually identical on the ice: skate, move the puck, block shots, eat minutes in the top-4.

ES Regular Stats:

The only key difference between the two was that AMac was used HEAVILY by the Islanders on the PP, but his production there didn't warrant all that icetime. His 3:19 with the Isles would put him in the top-20 among NHL dmen, but the paltry 11 PPP he managed with all that time was relatively poor, despite having guys like Tavares/Okposo/Vanek as his most frequent forwards. He was a non-factor on the Flyers' PP (0 points).

Ironically, Butler is actually slightly more productive at ES via P/60, despite playing with much worse players in front of him (Colborne, Stajan, Hudler).

AMac was only a slightly better shot-blocker than Butler -- it's odd that AMac gets so much praise for it, while most people don't even know who Chris Butler is.

Fancy Stats:

Neither player is very good at possession, but Butler started many more of his shifts in the d-zone, so you would expect his numbers to be much worse. Ironically, they were better, despite playing for one of the worst ES-possession teams in the league.

The Isles, despite their record, were actually a decent possession team, but were MUCH worse w/ AMac on the ice, for whatever reason.

Salary:

It's just really hard to justify the salary difference. Either the Blues got the deal of the century, or the Flyers overpaid BADLY for a mediocre defenseman. Based on the fact that Chris Butler is mostly meh as an NHL player, I'm inclined to believe the latter is more true.

TL;DR: Chris Butler and AMac are the same, but only one is swimming in Snider-bucks

He'll be here until he either retires or the Flyers eat salary.

It doesn't appear to be any more complex than that.

- AllInForFlyers

I don't think that is neccessarily true. If he has a solid bounce back season, they way his contract is structured, there could be a lot more interest after the upcoming season.

That's the only two possibilties? The other is that both players ability as a player merited the contract that they received. Butler couldn't get a one way contract from any team in the league, in a league where quality defenseman are at a premium?
This is one of the players frequently listed as a comparable player, to MacDonald. Well the League has spoken on that.
And I seem to remember another bad signing that the Flyers made in Mark Streit. That was labeled a bad move before he even played a game for the Flyers.

I love Storytime with Stewie unconditionally.

No, I'm not kidding.

Maybe Lindros shouldn't have been a Richard to the ref? As a matter of fact, being a Richard to the ref will never make things better.

Not really. Just shows that contracts aren't awarded based on performance, as much as they are bestowed based on perceived value/reputation.

Half a good season out of a 35+ guy with 3-years, ~$16M left on his deal and you're ready to declare "Mission Accomplished"? Seems a bit hasty to me.

How did Andrew MacDonald of all people get a decent "reputation" around the NHL in the first place?

This is a false statement. Contracts are definitely awarded on performance, and on what a team thinks about a player. And when it comes to free agents, after a team extensively scouts and watches a player.

I didn't declare anything. I simply stated that you called the Streit signing a bad signing before he even played a game for the team. But that's declared hasty, but saying it was a bad signing before he even plays a game, isn't hasty? Seems like a huge contradiction and a double standard.

Quite simply, Butler couldn't get a one way deal from a single NHL team? He had to accept a paycut and a 2 way deal? Why is that if he's comparable to MacDonald? Hell, the Flames wouldn't take him back for what he made last year? Something doesn't add up here.
