I used to always get mad at refs and give them poop when I was younger. During my Junior year of high school, I realized I'd be better off by talking with them and working with them. It's important not to call them out in front of people or try to embarrass them by telling them how wrong they were.

The best thing I did was go and talk to them during stoppages. I played basketball, so I'd go over and just say "hey, watch #3. He keeps tugging on my jersey as I'm running off screens."

By senior year, we had had many of the same officials. I had a good report with them and they'd even come up to me during timeouts and ask if they missed a call.

That's my normal m.o. Last night, not so much.

Sometimes, you just need to release the frustration. I'm sure the officials recognized the circumstance. They understand players get more upset when they're losing.

I still think the Flyers should have fought harder to get a pick in the JVR for Schenn deal. The Leafs should have had to throw in a 2nd at the very least.
- PhillySportsGuy

I thought they could've gotten a 4th maybe a 3rd in that deal.

Thats a solid reason to be upset. I've always felt the best refs aren't always the ones who make the best calls, but the ones who will talk to you and explain why they made that call. It makes life so much easier when you have an official who will talk to you. Some officials clam up and think they're always right. No official is always right just like no player always makes the right play.
- PhillySportsGuy

Oh absolutely. I was a captain for 3 seasons and had a great rapport with a bunch of refs.

I'd always talk to the refs. About the game...about anything. A lot of times I'd do the "hey watch #3" thing and they'd really acknowledge me, which was all I could ask for.

The best refs are the ones where I can skate to and say "what did you call him for?" And they'd say "it was a charge Matty. To me it looked like 15 took about 6 strides to hit him. I'm gonna call that every time". That's the best kind of ref there is.

The worst? "What did you call him for?" And the ref says "listen I called a charge if you wanna keep arguing you can have 2 more"

Same with umpires. If you think you're better than the game and you want to make yourself the spectacle, you can go (frank) yourself

If Lecavalier is still here, my centers would be Giroux, Lecavalier, Couturier, and whoever is going to center the 4th line.
- MJL

No way I bump Schenn from center in favor of an aging Lecavalier. I give Schenn a full season at center with competent wingers - again, not VL - and see what he can do. Schenn is part of the future of this team, either as a player or in trade; VL is still here because he couldn't be moved.

Edit: And I certainly hope VL puts it all back together, and I think he can.

I was a catcher for most of my baseball career, and I learned early on to be cool and respectful toward the ump or it was going to be a long game.

Yup. Most umps are good guys, and catchers are in the best position to joke around, ask questions on the dl, and just get to know them a bit. I enjoyed it a lot.

On our summer league team, guess it was 1996 or so, our captain got called for a hook. The ref who got him had a rep as a big jackass, and most guys kind of shook their heads and said nothing, to avoid setting him off.

So our guy goes to him, "Damnit, I'm usually a lot more sneaky than that" and winks. The Ref says, " Yeah, you are". From that game on we never had another issue with him

I realized what happened and just let it go. I knew GiG would notice. I forgot the second P and it autocorrected to report

Unacceptable. You should feel great internet shame.

Yeah, wasn't trying to be a Richard. I want to know when I mess crap up, like who and whom. Stupid subjects and objects. But it sounds like you know what's up, you were just too lazy to fix it.

You should feel great internet shame.

I know GiG's use of rapport in his response was definitely a shot at me. I took it personally.

He also goaded a guy who had 3 inches and about 45 lbs on him into a dumb penalty by yelling, "Whatcha gonna do about it, ya big Paul Bunyan Mother(frank)er?!?!" loud enough that people in the lot outside heard him

Yeah, I saw that after I wrote mine. Was going to go the 'leight' route, decided to act like I never saw it instead. I think I can pull it off.

Ha! I like that ref. Take it too serious, suck all the fun right out of the game. And seriously, most refs/linesmen would rather be playing, right? So they have to keep it entertaining.
