In Buffalo (a championship-less city) that thought process would fly, I'm not sure Pittsburgh feels the same way, they expect to contend for as long as they have 87 and 71
- sbroads24

They wouldn't label it a "failure" though. It's also not anywhere near over for the Penguins.

If you win a Championship with a group, you haven't failed. One championship is worth at least a decade of last place finishes. Whether it happened before or after a big pay day is irrelevant. One championship is an automatic success. This says nothing of the fact that they will still be in Pittsburgh for quite a while and are not anywhere near "done". The Penguins will most likely win another Cup with those two within the next five years.
- buffalofan19

The point was those contracts were made after the cup win . And it has been hard to put the right talent around them to compete for the cup . In a couple of years when the cap goes up enough maybe they can do so . But it has handcuffed them . Pittsburgh fans expect a lot more than Buffalo fans. So they probably are thinking failure.

That's debatable. They did just clean house as an organization. I agree, getting just the one cup is worth some suffering to follow. However I don't think they find it acceptable that they haven't gotten back there since Sid and Crosby were 22 and 23 years old (I think that was their age)

It's a disappointment for sure, but even if that premise is accepted, you can't label it a failure until it's over. Crosby and Malkin will most likely both be in Pittsburgh for at least a while. And remember, when they won the Cup in 2009, it came after they fired their coach. They still have quite a while to win another Cup, and they most likely will.

Agreed, but I guess it remains to be seen if one of the 2 superstar teams can win a cup after they signed their big deals.

Perry/Getz
Crosby/Malkin
Kane/Toews

All have won 1 before .....

Chicago has 2, and the $6.3 million deals that Toews and Kane had aren't exactly tiny.

He's not an idiot, I would agree with that, but he is on the "Corsi tells you any and everything" bandwagon.

I like advanced stats, but hockey isn't baseball.

- sbroads24

Advance stats in hockey are great to tell you what teams are good. IMO they are meaningless to marginal for individual player analysis, being that hockey is a free flowing game, and cannot be broken down play by play like baseball or football.

6.3 when cap was 68 million versus 10.5 when the cap should be around 72 million. Big difference . No one is saying they do not deserve it . Trying to put the team needed around them will be.

No thanks . At this point I don't think Mr OReilly cares about winning cups . Just filling his bank account . They are building something great in Colorado and he is forcing his way out .

Agreed. Especially when you are analyzing an individual, you need to take all of the numbers into consideration.

WGR (Schopp and Coller) have been blasting Myers for the last year citing that his possession #'s are not good, and praise Ehrhoff's possession #'s

Yet completely fail to ever mention the big difference in offensive zone start advantages Ehrhoff received. When your team sucks and you get put in the toughest defensive situations, your advanced stats will show that

It was 56.7 big difference . Players were getting 57% of gross revenues then not 50% they are getting now . Better hope Canadian dollar does not fall further or that cap may not go up as anticipated. Basic economics.

The salary cap was 54 when kane and toews sign those deals. They accounted for roughly 23.5 % of the cap. With their new deals, they will account for about 30%, it's not that big of a difference.

The Hawks will be fine

They will free up space by moving Hossa and Sharp as well.

That's not factoring in Crawfords deal or the 3 expensive D they have.

They have a boatload of cap dedicated a few players.

Atm. I don't even think they need to. They have a enough talent on ELCs to make it through the year. They should move bickell, and oduya (sp?) And get ready for another WCW appearance.

7% is a big difference when trying to build a cup contender . Salary cap was 59.4 million when that contract kicked in 2010 - 2011
