Precisely.
Organizations can't have it both ways, and star players won't let them ESPECIALLY if it's at their expense. - As_I_See_It
it seems funny that the bridge has become so prevalent and the way to go for many gm's. while fans (and gm's seemingly) assume the overpay right off the hop is a terrible idea.
you look at a guy like ryan johansen. is there really much doubt how great this kid is gonna be?
overpay him a mil or two now, but lock him up for 7 or 8. you could be saving 2+ mil a year for the final 5 or 6 years of that contract.
for example; I look at the hall contract, and the oilers are laughing now.
but it's a gamble of course as in terms of eberle, they may have been abit too hasty. |

He's got to prove it on both ends to warrant that kind of money, IMO. No doubt he'll get paid, but is he worth all that? I'm not so sure. If he improves in his own end then there's no question in my mind you bite the bullet and pay him. - Gretz2Kurri
Given that you're a Kings fan can you not relate to Doughty 3 years ago? It's almost an identical situation (numbers are different with a different CBA, and cap situation). People speculated as to the kind of money he was going to get, and said there are still questions about his game, and he hasn't turned into the player to be making that 7mil per yet.
Turned out to be a good contract because he developed into the player that earns it, and more. We'll have to wait and see if it's the same case with Subban. Obviously I'm hoping it is. |

his defensive game is getting more solid. and will continue to do so.
but his impact on the game, and ability to take it over is what makes him so special.
it really overrides the warts imo.
watching that boston series was crazy. they had no answer for him. montreal got their bridge, now they need to pay one of their 2 franchise cornerstones - hugefemale dog77
You certainly got it right. We'll end up paying him a king's ransom but that's business. I hope they put this to rest soon so we can move on... |

that debate is going to go on until the end of time. a few years ago, Subban was mistake prone in his own end.
Now, he makes less mistakes than 85% of the defenders in the league, while at the same time being more offensively dynamic than 95% of the other defensemen. It's simply not true anymore that he's a liability. Habits are hard to break, but eventually, hopefully people will start to see that the guy has grown up in the years since the media decided to blow the situation completely out of proportion in an attempt to find some sort of reason to disparage the guy.
also, there's just gonna be the people who hate on him no matter what,, but that's just how some people deal with the fact they have trouble admitting something they dont like is good.
for instance, I can't stand Lucic, i would fight him (and end up in jail AND beaten up) if i ever met him. BUT, i know he's damn good at what he does and is an asset that any team would love to have.
Opinions aren't facts people. Just because that uppity (used that word on purpose closet-cases) smiling, energetic skilled guy gets really into the game and doesn't play like hockey like a 60 year old pro-golfer, doesn't mean he sucks.
This post wont change minds (the internet never changes anyone's mind), but assuming that his teammates hate him because 'he got mad at them a couple times for not giving him the puck', or 'he got in a fight at practice' is silly, because I'm pretty sure that happens on every single team in the league at some point. This is just a convenient thing to point to and say 'see! told you he stinks!' for people who don't seem to understand how hockey works.

The only bridge Subban wants now is the one built at the entrance to his new castle after he pillages the Canadiens on a 8 year, 96 Million dollar deal the Habs will give him! |

this has to be a ridiculous headline if pk wants to stay in mtl... PK matured greatly under michel therrien, never reached the 40 points plateau before he played for MT, and he had a norris lockout year and 53 points last year and a great playoffs run, these speculations by eklund are just for drama... |

Hilarious and true. If only Ekland could figure out that combination instead of bashing Therrien in EVERY Montreal-related post. |

Subban deserves the money he gets...should be at least 7 million +++.
Phaneuf get 7 million and isn't even top 15 defencemen in the league???
He's good... just not worth the contract. |

one thing is for certain, habs will be due for a big regress next season. subban will get a terrible contract and this team will miss the playoffs or be knocked out first round be a legit contender like pittsburgh, boston, toronto, philly etc |

Such a dumb argument. If both contracts were signed in same year - sure but comparing salaries when cap was $59M means very little. |

That's funny, people said that before last season.
Also (frank)ing hilarious that you list Toronto as a serious contender, given that they haven't done anything to improve on last year, and well.... |

With all due respect, Ek's bashing of Therrien have to be related with Danny Brière ice time (at least it was Ek's breaking point). Therrien was not in love with the player. Bergevin made a mistake signing Danny. Not a huge mistake but a mistake nonetheless.
Do you really think that with Brière in a top 6 role the Habs season would have been better? And do you really think that the Habs would have reach the Cup Finals with Brière in a prominent role?
I don't think so. Therrien is not the best coach in the league but he's not the worse, far from it.
And PK will sign. Don't lose any sleep on this one.

Not to mention Doughty was not the same player when he signed, compared to what he is now.
Subban isn't worth as much as Doughty, thats very true. But Doughty is also worth significantly more than his 7mil. |

and habs regressing next year with another year of development for subban, galchenyuk, Gallagher, beaulieu and of course carey price; is far from certain.
I got not love for mtl, but they are unequivocally better than Toronto at present |
