P.K Subban is a great defenseman maybe top-5, but in comparison Erik Karlsson makes 6.5mil/year which is the* biggest steal ever, and he's a better defenseman. That's what happens when you wait too long to sign someone.

Like it or not Phaneuf is a benchmark for Subban's contract because he's on a new one as of this year. It's a point to go from and say "This is Phaneuf's contract in the new CBA and cap structure that's in place now, I think Subban is X amount better and therefore this is what he deserves in the same circumstances." You can't do that with anyone else mentioned because they all signed contracts 2-3 years ago. The Habs can't go to Subban and say "Hey Doughty's game is ahead of yours and he's only making 7mil", because the contract was signed when Doughty's game was far less developed and when the CBA and cap were different.

It's not about the player in the contract, it's about it being relevant to current negotiations. Contracts like Doughty's and Keith's are not.

Are you insinuating that PK isn't worth the $/term because of his "1 season with at least 40 pts"? I would suggest that you don't watch PK play much as he will be worth everything he gets. If Phanuef is worth 7 million (to the leafs and oilers) then Subban would be worth 11 million (to the leafs and oilers).
