6+ mil in cap space... - Guile
Believe it or not that's how it worked out.. assuming Despres and Spaling sign for around 1.5 each. Just reiterates how effective playing young guys on ELCs can be |

There are a lot of cap strapped teams (I'm looking at you, Boston!) with some interesting RFA's. As a GM you do risk damaging your rep and black balling yourself whenever you need a potential trade partner, but this is a new era. I think you're going to start to see that unwritten rule fade away.
If you do tender an offer to someone else's RFA then you better be prepared whenever one of your guys come due. - Incredible Malk
I get there could be repercussions but Rutherford isn't going to be around long, and honestly I could see Chiarelli(I know I didn't spell that right) getting relived shortly as well. That may cool some of the heat down the road.
Another thing I think is in another year or two I really don't see us having the cap issues we have now. Sid, Malkins, and Tangers deals will be less and less painful to deal with. The only worriseome one on the horizon would be Matta's.
Take a shot at Boston when we can, Rutherford would hit King status in my book if he did this. |

Edmonton has no depth at center.... Sutter + Samuelsson for Yakopov?
Would they do it? Would you?

Yeah... if you do offer sheet someone else's young RFA player, you better make sure that you extend yours before they get to that point. |

I like your style. This is a really good do you or don't you. I lean towards yes. I don't think Edmonton does though. They will view him as the #1 overall pick and demand more. |

I would in a second. Samuelson is a nice prospect but he's behind Harrington despres domoulin pouliot maatta and he has to clear waivers this year. Would Edmonton I'd say F no |

Now, forgive me since I'm just going off of the positions listed on the team page... but its showing 5 Centers for Edmonton, and they did just draft one with their first round pick. Kinda think they have depth or upcoming depth there?
However, only 3 defensmen on roster for them, I really don't know about their RFA or recent signings, but could we deal Martin and or Skuds there? |

That's what sucks... if he was the 8th overall pick, they likely wouldn't have that hangup.
I would bet that it would take a better d prospect than Samuelsson, but I wanted to start low instead of going right for Harrington or something. |

Samuelsson is the odd man out of the young guys. |

He's the next Bortuzzo... Good enough to play bottom pairing in the NHL, stuck behind other young D in the pipeline, but not waiver exempt. |

Let's bundle him into a trade too, he is more than expendable. |

So Shero's philosophy was to draft mobile puck moving D. He said if you don't need them, you can always trade them because of their high value.
My question is... Why can't we look to trade one or two of these guys that are on the cusp of joining the NHL for like-kind forwards? Hell, I'd trade Pouliot for a great young forward.
I'm still a fan of Ray Shero, but he sure has left this team unbalanced on multiple levels. |

Why trade bortuzzo? I mean if we are gonna trade any two defensemen it should be Martin or Scuderi. Bortuzzo is a solid defensemen with a reasonable cap. |

I'd prefer to trade the established D (Martin) and luxury item (Sutter) for that good forward. Those d men playing on ELC and playing well is extremely appealing and will be one of the positive things that Ray Shero left behind for the team. |

Yeah well that one isn't likely to happen for obvious reasons. |

I understand, BUT I just think if it had to be any two ( Currently one the NHL roster), it should be one of those two. |

In a perfect world, that works. But, will Martin and/or Sutter get you that player? Pouliot will probably secure that player and to me, he's a carbon copy of Letang who is locked up with an 8 year deal.
I'm all over the map on this, but we have all these young assets on D and virtually none at forward. I just hate to see Sid and Geno working with aging vets and wanna be 1st/2nd line players. |

IMO, Pouliot is the most "Bang for your buck" when it comes to trading. The kid is highly looked at by canadian writers and has a lot of years ahead of him. If I am a team looking to make a big trade with the penguins I am asking about Pouliot. |

His philosophy was sound but the problem was he contradicted himself but never giving them an opportunity to show what they could do. So in reality they are unknown at the NHL level and won't get you much.
It's easy to tear into the Scuderi signing in hind sight, but really if you've done nothing but draft defensemen year in and year out why do this signing. It's like he had no confidence in them himself. |

I think the Gogo-Neal/Nisk and Whitney-Kunitz/Tangradi deals really jaded him. He always thought defensemen would be easy to flip into multiple assets. Hi drafts indicated as much. Almost all of them puck-movers.
Really, the lack of any NHL-ready forwards in the system is a major indictment of his tenure. All of those assets just sitting in the minors and WBS doing you no good. |

They simply never played a defensively sound, simple, structured game. Sure, the Harlem Globetrotters hockey has been entertaining, but it's not the recipe for winning the Cup in this decade. It took a great player like Paul Mart 2 years to look like the player we love. Nisky took 3 years to look consistent and credible.
IDK, I'm just hoping for a much simpler game for some of these kids. |
