I agree with your point, but I have to say I have no desire for Ott to come back either.
- Pierceme69

And that's fine.

That's really all that needs saying, imo.

I bet you want to bring back the 5th Beatle too. I wonder if there is another fan base that grows so attached to it's mediocre players as some Sabres fans do.

The best part about that is they have never won anything here.

...is Stewart, too.
- grand-magus

I haven't seen Stewart play enough to judge he was injured to soon. It is a contract year and he has scored some goals in the past. I wouldn't mind seeing what he has to offer this year and then flipping him at the deadline.

No, I'm of the firm believer that a team like the Sabres are in need of difference makers. And nothing that Steve Ott has done throughout his career has really indicated that he's been one. That's not to say he's a terrible hockey player. It's simply saying that the results show that he's not as good as people say he is.

I didn't mind Steve Ott when he was here. And I'm not going to be upset if they end up signing him. I also don't think they need him. Gionta already fills his role and then some.

- buffalofan19

Ott is most effective on the third line, second team pp and pk

16-17 minutes a game

he was getting way too many minutes here and when you put a C on him, he loses part of his edge IMO

I think that's when I realized this team needed to bottom out and completely rebuild, when people were convinced we "needed" a goon that couldn't play

That may or may not be correct. However, even when he was in that role, the teams he played for still did nothing. My point is that for all the accolades he gets, the results simply aren't there, whether he's in the role where he's effective or not. Again, this does not mean I am saying that he's a terrible hockey player. He's simply not as much of a factor that people say he is.

So is REINHART the annointed one now? Is he a 1st ballot HOFer? I hope he does well but some of us had differing opinions champ and we'll see how they play in the NHL. I'll be rooting just as passionately for your annointed one but you might want to tone it down a tad before he steps on an NHL rink. You were drooling over Vanek for years and I told you the guy was a trick pony who was lazy. Who is right now?

I watched a lot of stars games before he came to buffalo

you would have loved that ott, all over the ice and producing

that being said, for the most part third liners do not do much in the regular season

Look at Ott's numbers when he played 3rd line minutes for the Blues.

No goals in 21 games and an awful +/-

I did too. He was an entertaining player, but, when it came to the big picture the Stars were a disappointment. I often look at it with this rule of thumb: if I have to say "well, he'd be more effective if he had this player or that player, and/or didn't have this player or that player" then he's really not that important to begin with.

I never liked Vanek from early on when there were games I just never noticed him. Miller? He had his ups and downs but without the Olympic year he was a pretty above average goalie. He sold himself well.

That's my point, but ultimately, it comes down to wins. If Ott posts those totals, but the Blues still win, I'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and concede that something he's doing is helping them win games. The reality was that Ott probably wasn't having a negative effect on the Blues. He was simply having no effect.
