martin/letang - joescullz
That's another missing point regarding why they're not going to trade Martin. With Martin, Letang looked great in the playoffs.
Finally finding a suitable partner for Letang, and then shipping that partner out the door makes little sense, pending UFA or not. |

For a second, I'd like to de-escalate the trash talk (or at least put this as an aside to it) and ask a serious question: how far are you willing to go to rebuild to pipeline? Would you sacrifice years of Malkin and Crosby's prime to have a stronger farm for tomorrow? - BulliesPhan87
I dont think you can sacrifice any years to be honest. I know when they leave, the team will hit a low again. You have two great talents, you can't sit there and take 2-3 years to build around them. They are in their late 20s, its now or never with them. That being said, if you are going to trade young assets, it better be worth it. I don't want 3rd line guys brought in at the expense of a 1st and a player like Despres. |

Sutter, nor Martin is going anywhere. Martin could possibly be dealt at the deadline, but definitely not now. We need him with Maatta and Pouliot not available until at least Christmas. The d pairings will look like this until Maatta returns:
martin/letang
Scuderi/ehrhoff
Depres/bortuzzo - joescullz
Dealing Martin at the deadline would be stupid. You either trade him during the offseason or he stays on the roster for the entire season. |

They probably don't want the mass of people butting in. |

You know what helped his game even more than his wingers, was the fact that he actually looked like he gave a crap; which he doesn't. He only played well in the playoffs because of his contract year. The guy is a cancer, he had Cooke and Kennedy and looked disinterested; the guy has no heart. I can not freaking wait until he destroys some other team. - nbartley9
I don't even think cooke n Kennedy r in the show anymore.... |

Kennedy not so much... 17 points and a -10.
Cooke put up 28 and was a +8... he was still relevant. |

I've never said that. Don't put words in my mouth. I've actually argued the opposite, Evander Kane being the most recent and frequent example. - Ryan_Wilson
Everytime this comes up, you give a snide, sarcastic "nothing to see here ... there is no validity to it" comment. The same predictable "he has character issues because he is an exuberant black hockey player". I'm bringing up the fact that MULTIPLE people in the media, who have contact with the kid, have spoken or written about his character issues. Are they lying? One or two articles, you can probably write off ... more than that, well ...

Kulemin.
My wild, uneducated, guess here is that the Penguins are considering the value of signing him for a CHEAP 1 year deal, or a CHEAP deal over an extended period of time.
The 1 year deal is great in case he's a bust, but will completely backfire if he lights it up for 30+ goals. The following contract will be expensive.
The long term cheap deal is attractive because it could make Malkin happy, but the obvious problem there is what if it doesn't work out? What if he is a 16 goals/year, 38 points/year player?
I don't see an option for an expensive contract, either long or short. But, I'm constantly suprised. For example, the cap's almost where it was before the lockout. Hurray! Time for another lockout to set up systems that will not protect GMs from being idiots. |

Said this last night. It's either trade him now and get assets, or keep him and let him walk at the end of the year because we won't have the money to keep him. JR should know this after yesterday's money grab of defensemen (see Brooks Orpik).

Martin to L.A. for Pearson? He looked good in the playoffs and would provide size and speed for the Pens. |

I think we're in the same boat. Not to say management should just throw trade assets around all crazy-like, I think giving Crosby an worthy winger is wisely maximizing his value. |

I too expect a cheap one year deal with Kulemin. One-year deals seem to be the big flavor of this year's free agency period. Cap didn't go up that much. It was supposed to go up to as much as 71M. 2 M short is a big deal for several teams.
One year gives the Penguins to see if this "chemistry" carries over from the KHL to the NHL and gives them one year to gel. If they do, then look into a longer term contract. If not, you wash your hands and wish him the best after this year.
I like Kulemin as a third line guy. To me, his skill set screams this. I cringe at the notion of this, I really do and as much as it makes me vomit, Seto might be a better fit for Malkin as far as his skating and shooting.

Trading Martin at the deadline is unlikely, but it would be be contingent on Maatta's healthy return and months of seeing if the kids are indeed ready to play. Trading him now offers none of those assurances.
And the return might even be better, it's not often that a puck moving two-way defenseman of Martin's caliber are available at the deadline, and a needy contender would overpay to get him. |
