I'm surprised by the complete lack of criticism of Yzerman here.

To end up with a few low picks and some cap space after moving all those assets seems like a pretty low return to me. And did they really retain some of Gagner's salary?

The Coyotes must be laughing right now.

moves to do...

resign sustr to a barberio like deal 900k.
sign ehrhoff to a 3 year 4.5 mill a year deal.
sign boyle to a 2 year 3 mill a year deal.
sign vet goalie to a 1 year deal between 1 and 2 mil.

all the cap space we have is then filled up roster looks like

killorn stamkos drouin
palat filppula callahan
connolly johnson kucherov
brown nameshnikov panik

hedman ehrhoff
carle garrison
gudas boyle
brewer

What assets? Purcell and Thompson? He made it clear his intentions in the deals were done to clear cap space, not to bring back return. He wants to position himself for free agency in a couple days. At this point he's been talkting to UFA's since June 25 and he has an idea what it will take to get them. He couldn't do that with the salary he had tied up in Purcell and co.

even the most clueless people can realize that he's doing it to clear cap space in order to bring in a couple of UFAs.

he wasn't going to take any players back in a deal that was an obvious salary dump...............what did you expect him to get? other GMs knew EXACTLY what he was doing, they weren't gonna start paying 1st and 2nd rd picks in arguably the deepest draft (2015) in the last decade.

You're right, I understand and agree with your points.

So if Yzerman's intention was to clear cap space, don't you think he did a weak job of it if he had to retain salary on Gagner?

And don't you think he should have been able to get better than a 6th for Gagner, while still dumping salary?

What happened is that Yzerman's intentions were so clear to other GMs, and he was in such a rush to clear space before July 1st, that he was in a position of weakness in trade negotiations and they took advantage of him.

Not really we would have had to retain salary for teddy Purcell in moving him! Plus we dumped crombeen so that almost made up for that 1.6.

still crazy that he only got a 6th rounder back and still had to retain salary...Gagner could still be a very solid player

Ya I thought a 2nd round pick would have been fair! But it's about dumping money.

Otherwise he would have bought out Gagner and if he did that he would have to pay 1/3 of his salary, now he trades him to Phoenix. The 6th was for Crombeen and thats about what he is Worth (a bit less). If you then come with the argument, "Why didn't he just buy out Purcell?", he is older and SY would have to pay 2/3 of his salary!
Good job by Yzerman!

First of all he didn't need to do anything.he has a plan and implemented it. It's more than most GMs are doing. I don't see a lot of teams doing much maybe because their prospect pool is so lousy. He's looking to add a piece maybe he gets it maybe not and he gets one at the trade deadline in March but either way he has room.

So 4.5-4.75 for Stralman for 4 years Sustr 1mil and Connelly 1-1.5 plus bonuses and he's done net cap hit 0 plus room with Ohlunds LITR. Cap available right now about 9.5

So now what are we looking at ?

Drouin stamkos Connolly
Palat filppula Callahan
Killorn Johnson kucherov
Brown(?) Paquette panik

Hedman UFA (?)
Carle garrison ???
Brewer gudas ??
Barberio or sustr ?

Let me know what you guys think. Maybe brown goes back to aHL , works on finishing lol

Maybe kucherov goes back down and paquette as we'll but as stammer man said I think the organization saw paquette and liked him and deemed Nate affordable , so I slot him in at 4th line c

I'd be surprised to see a top 6 forward signed on Tuesday , there's no room if we are including drouin and Connolly , and it makes sense to do that because the organization has stated many times they need top 6 minutes and yZerman just made room for them to fit in . My next question is about the 4th line , seeing as I think our 3rd line is set . Maybe a gritty big body to play 4th line alongside paquette and panik / brown ?

And my other opinion is we sign a top 4 defender on Tuesday and keep lindback . With a new/better defense and better support from forwards he can do well.

Swap Callahan and Connelly and looks good Connelly needs to work for 1st line status. We didn't pay Cally almost 6 to be second line

I think Stralman is the way to go.. Saw great improvement and his CORSI ratings (HARD- 16.2 / HART- 12.3) are the highest by far the highest on the Rangers defensemen roster. Also probably the most consistent of the Ranger bunch and is 27 years old...

He might actually be the cheapest out of the 4 top four defensemen out there...

Rangers offered Stralman $4 mil per year.. The Lightning could go $5 mil per year with the added benefit of no state income tax and we should be good to go...
