Just a hunch....

TBL are clearing cap space to offer Vanek a big deal...

Could you imagine Stamkos and Vanek together.... yikes.

Ehrhoff is good, that's about it.

He's not bad, he's not great. We lost a good player for nothing and that blows, but in reality he won't matter in the long run

- sbroads24

I believe we can still recieve trade offers for him?

Like I said, I fully understand the rules and implications. I take that risk. If he retires in any other year except 2020, the hit is more than manageable. It's a small percentage scenario. So what?
- buffalofan19

Because it's obvious that the possible return didn't outweigh the recapture penalty.

It's not like we let Steven Stamkos walk.....

Again, "if" it happens. I absolutely understand the rule, and the implications. I still would rather them take that risk.
- buffalofan19

Then I suppose you have your opinion and we have ours.

God bless the Buzz.

And to me, the possible penalty weighs very little.

Why does everyone seem to think I don't understand this?
- buffalofan19

you might read it .... but let that soak in man...

just let that soak in..

We'd be paying a Ovechkin/Crosby/Malkin/Giroux type salary out of our cap..... with NOTHING in return on the ice...

could you imagine that?

But who cares right, as long as Murray isn't GM then, no one will care.

Now I am reading that Couver might be trying to get Miller's rights....

If I remember correctly... if STL trades Miller's rights... then we get some picks in return don't we?

They dealt with it now . Why wait to see if it is manageable ? Do you want it hanging over the teams head if we are a contender ? We can't get that one extra piece to get us over the top in a cup run. I applaud Murray's vision and thinking that far out . Sure it stings right now . But at least Murray has a vision and is not willing to compromise it.

I think the fact that we've been able to get so many other assets in the last year or so also made it easier to walk away from him without anything in return.

At some point, you have to realize that there's also only so much space. With the amount of draft picks they've picked up over the last few years, they had the luxury of being able to walk away from Ehrhoff and rid themselves of a bad attitude and possible cap nightmare scenario.

Seems stupid for Vancouver to do that at this point. They're already able to speak with him per the changes to the CBA and that timeframe already started. They can sign him tomorrow, so why give something up?

What do you think we could have traded him for? What great return do you think we could have recieved knowing the structure of his contract and the penalties associated with it?

Why would another GM trade for him when he knows TM is in a tough spot?

And in 6 years my house might burn down or get struck by lightning. In six years I might get my identity stolen and lose everything. That doesn't preclude me from going to work and building up wealth now. It's the mindset I have the most problem with.
- buffalofan19

Not a good metaphor at all. Risk management takes a lot of foresight.

Unlike your house which is likely insured, the Sabres here would have their insurance completely drop them, but not before they ask the Sabres to foot millions of dollars first.

So i'm sure all of you read that TM offered all 3 2nd round picks to move back into the 1st and was turned down...

but then I read that CHI got a better 1st for a 27th and 62nd..

and that NYI got 28th for 35 and 57th...

So either... Teams are realizing how stacked our prospect pool is and don't want to contribute to that and basically "c0ck-blocked" TM... or TM was trying to offer those 3 picks for a much higher than 20 something pick like in the mid-teens.

I believe it was mentioned that he was trying to get something in the 9-17 range.

And to me, dismissing the penalty is dismissing the future of this team, which is a rebuild makes no sense.

They are making moves to ensure long term success. Not short term

Sheehy says he'll get a 7-yr deal for Niskanen? No question. Same with Stastny. Best in class always make out like bandits on July 1.

YIKES.

I'm gonna be critical here and mention that 2 snipers on the same line won't help if they're next to each other.

Yes yes they'll score tonzo..but Stammer needs a playmaking winger I think more than another sniper.

I didn't read through all the pages to see if anyone posted this:

Buffalo Sabres

Top Pick: Sam Reinhart is the best pure passer in the draft class. His ability to dictate tempo elevates his game to a distinct level. Reinhart can make all kinds of plays with the puck, and his elite hockey sense stands out regularly. He has average size but will work hard in battles for the puck. Some of the skills that distinguish Reinhart are his smart play in the defensive zone and his ability to shut down opposing top players, and he is an asset on the penalty kill.

Summary: With Reinhart the Sabres' depth down the middle in young players is elite currently. They added a bunch of talent after Reinhart, adding several top forward prospects and a former top prospect in Brycen Martin who has been up and down in the WHL. There were no pluggers, and even though Lemieux is a physical player, he has offense to his game too. They have an elite farm system, and after today, you need a really convincing argument to say they don't have the best pipeline in the NHL. -- Pronman

Organizational assessment: The Sabres used this draft to continue their trawl of the hockey talent ocean, adding the highly-talented center Sam Reinhart in the first round to go along with five other picks in the subsequent two rounds. With probably the best prospect pipeline in the NHL and oodles of cap space, the Sabres are poised to rapidly scale the NHL standings ladder in the near future. Grade: A+ -- Provenzano

- Pierceme69

Outside Reinhart, we're probably just looking 2-way grinders & depth...

But then again this was always projected to be somewhat of modest draft class.

Lemieux should get a look on the 4th line in 3 years or so, and he can be a valuable role player moving forward. I really like that Lemieux & Reinhart have really strong support systems around them from family & friends who know the drill. They won't bust.
