Well, Murray just said they absolutely could have traded him. He didn't think that was the right way to go due to the penalties that could be imposed if he retired early. So basically he didn't want to get punished for something Darcy did.

It really was a no win situation. You won't be that upset about all of this when we have plenty of cap space to sign Reinhart and whoever it is that we get next year to the deals they're going to need.

- HonkFortheGoose

And that's what I don't like. He just admitted he was afraid of something that might possibly happen. Not trading a guy because he might retire in 6 years instead of 7, to me, is operating scared.

That being said, like I said yesterday, I hate the rule more than anything.

If that was the case, they would have traded him. They would have taken something for him. The reality is he's most likely going to get more per year than he did in Buffalo when all is said and done. A team paying a player more than a team he was just cut by says there's more to that story.

Again, I'm not upset that they let him go. I'm upset that they let him go for nothing. I understand the recapture implications, and I absolutely say "so what?"

- buffalofan19

Per Murray "I could have traded him, but the recapture penalty of he retired makes the contract untradeable"

If he we're to retire in 6 years, and we are contenders and we get nailed with a 10mil cap penalty??? That's worth moving Ehrhoff for a pick and prospect now? Sorry man I think your way off on this one. He's thinking long term, we have been blasting this organization for being short sighted for so long

Like I said, you won't hate it when we're able to sign the guys we need to later on without having to be worried.

The rule is stupid. The league is punishing the teams for contracts that they had previous approved. It's what continues to make the NHL a laughing stock in comparison to many of the other major sports leagues.

Murray says he has recieved many calls from agents (some that have played here in the past). Moulson & Ott, really just want Moulson.

Plan B Murray says - good character guys (there will be no Stastny or Richards)

"We need some guys to teach these young guys"

Who is out there?

Buy outs should benefit the Sabres as the week goes on!

It's a big "if" and nowhere near a guarantee. Again, I say "so what". I absolutely say take the return now, and worry about a potential supposed "problem" in seven years.

Not to mention, with the average tenure of GM's nowadays (I know it's hard to fathom given Regier's tenure), Murray may very well not be around by then.

I wouldn't be surprised if he fielded a lot of calls about Girgensons this weekend as well. By the end of the season, Girgensons was getting a lot of attention from around the league.

The problem could have been in 3 years not 7.

Again Ehrhoff wasn't good enough and wouldn't have gotten a good enough return to have potential consequences down the road.

Id argue that no one on the Sabres including Myers or Girgensons is worth having that potential handicap when you are trying to win

I also didn't like Murray saying he couldn't help improve the team. To me, that says they wanted him out more than he wanted out. That's not to say he wanted to stay, but no matter how no-nonsense and straightforward he sounds, there's more to this story.
- buffalofan19

You might be looking into it way too much.

His positives didn't outweigh the negatives to stay here. He didn't want to be a part of the rebuild and 10 million dollars is a hell of a penalty to pay when we're actually competing. The move makes a massive amount of sense. It is what it is, it's a shame we couldn't get compensated but oh well. It's a safe move.

IMO, the more to the story was TM didnt want a $10M tag hanging over his head. TM's statements are nothing more than he isnt the most tactful person in the world and says what he's thinking. He looked at the risk/reward of it, something not so attractive coming back versus a possible $10M boat anchor. Sometimes you just need to cut bait and move on.

Just stop, we have a GM with a set and you want to crucify him after 5-6 months? Unbelievable!

No, it really doesn't.

He didn't want to be here and his recapture penalty combined made it worth the compliance buyout. It's simple.

In three years, you would be talking about $2 million in cap space over 5 years, not $10.

From what it sounds like to me, he tried to trade him during the draft. Couldn't get any takers. He didn't like Ehrhoff's attitude and felt it was best to remove it from the room.

Does it suck? In a lot of ways, yes. I thin it does. But at th same time, I'd rather Murray not have to worry/prepare for the possibility of limiting the cap a bit in case he did retire prior to the expiry.
