ya I hear ya, but I truley do beleive that when the time is right, the purse strings will loosen ..... If his team can make a legitamite run, he will spend.

we'd be better off financially with the league owning us, that is so sad...

don't like how murray has handled this F***in situation......

just say you have a have a guy who finished 4th in league scoring just two years ago. He's a point per game #1 center and you want fair return ....

all this crap about being so open and honest - as well as trying to save face of the Ottawa Senators - is really started to piss me off.

get the return and stop throwing players under the bus

so 6 years 33mil for ehrhoff. does that get it done?

lots of teams that want him might not be able to fit him under the cap

I think that would get it done. Maybe even 30 million... That's excellent term.

Think Florida will sign him though.

not sure you get him for 5 mil.....but even if they signed him at 6 mil, i'd be good with it. he'd EASILY be our 2nd best d-man.

florida has to be careful, they only have 4 players signed beyond this upcoming season, and literally have to re-sign EVERYBODY at the same time. they still have campbell under contract too.....not saying they can't do it, but talon needs to be careful or he'll find himself in the same predicament he had in chicago, minus the cup win.

Hmm, well here's my thinking...

If Buffalo bought out his remaining 7 years at 4 million, it's because they couldn't find someone to take that contract off their hands...

If no-one will give up any asset to acquire Ehrhoff for that term and dollar, will anyone pay him 1.5 million more per year for one less year?

Hard to say... I don't know if Tim Murray was playing hardball, demanding a significant return for Ehrhoff, but you'd have to think even a middling return would be better than actually having to buy a player out.

the reason they bought him out was to avoid ths cap recapture.....probably didnt even try to trade him. if he had retired early (say at 36 or 37) sabres would have been saddled with a 3 mil cap hit for 3 years.

if ghey buy him out, cap hit is 100% gone. team prob would have had fo grossly overpay in a tradd to get murray to accept the recapture risk

Is a cap recapture risk really that severe? According to capgeek (which could be wrong for all I know), if Ehrhoff retires at 37, there will be a one year 3 million dollar cap penalty. If he retires at 36, there will be a two year 3 million dollar cap penalty.

Quite frankly, I don't think he'll retire any sooner than that, and I don't know that 3 million dollars will be all that massive come 2019. It'll probably be the equivalent of about 2 million dollars in current terms.

Not saying you're wrong in your assessment of TM's motives for buying him out. Just saying why TM would have been foolish for having made his assessment that way.

all the speculation i read from guys like mckenzie, lebrun, etc, said it was the deciding factor....murray didnt want to risk the hit, at the same time all his young guys were coming off their ELCs

Well, that is very conservative considering it is not at all clear to me that all of Buffalo's ELCs will be earning 5 million dollar raises... Must be nice to have an owner that can spend literally tens of millions of dollars just to get out of one or two years of possibly having to accommodate a 3 million dollar cap hit

This actually a teachable moment.

Ottawa is actually much farther along eith their young players and RFAs needing contracts. Teams committing to long term! big dollar deals to guys 30+ will see constant cap pressures in the future.

O'Reilly is not the exception, he is the future of contracting.

Yeah, well, maybe they were right for exactly this reason...

Either way, though, this should indicate how difficult it will be for Ottawa to finish in good position for McDavid or Eichel... Buffalo minus Miller and now their best defenseman!

Gonna be pretty hard to top... (bottom?)

Fair enough, though unless you're also right about our current financial situation being very short term, it won't really matter how 'well' our cap situation is structured moving forward...

Tim Murray is going to be $25m below the cap floor.

How many draft picks or prospects is he looking to take on if he takes LaCavalier or Phaneuf or another high dollar deal like Rick Nash?

That would be a smart move. Couple of years as an informal playing coach.

But, I think more older players are looking for a shot at a Cup run.

Yeah, I'm sure they are, but then again not every older player in the league has a 7 million dollar + cap hit.

Superb lede thread on the Winnipeg site on youth and cap. It is not just the Murray's who are trying to dump veteran contracts and avoid new long term deals.

I'm not one of the st. Louis fans on here to troll, but as for all of you senators fan say Berglund isn't a top 6 forward your just plain stupid. Im not saying he and a 1st round pick are worth Spezza, but if KT is gonna be good enough to buy your #1 center Berglund sure as hell is good enough to be in your to six.

berglund might be top six on some teams, he's not a top six center in ottawa.

turris > berglund

zibanejad > berglund

hence, he's not a top six center on our team.

Never said a top center he can play left wing and has great pick control and plays the boards as well as anybody

And not to mention Berglund has 4 30+ point seasons and Turris never cracked that to this year
