with all due and humility and respect...I know nothing about drafting highschool kids...but Bowman traded up to get this kid and I only saw 1 mock draft that had him in the 1st round and that was around 26.
Curious what he sees in this kid that no one else seems to have seen. - bogiedoc
Apparently, St. Louis saw it - word is, they were looking at him at 21. |

I've said before that I don't think Rasmussen came over here to play in Rockford for three years. With the exception of Svedberg, Stan and Q sure seem to fast track the Swedes. |

Where is Mr. Ricochet, our resident USHL expert? - NewToHockey
I wanted Thatcher Demko at 27 or that if they moved up they'd take Fabbri.
I'm sick, and they trade an early 3rd rounder to move up!! But this guy will fit right in with a good portion of the Hawk roster. A lazy group, a group that feels entitled to playing 20-25 minutes and expect two points, a group that would rather make 27 passes and score without being touched, a group that would rather try and skate through 4 players lined up at the blueline than dump and go to work, a group that barely made the playoffs after winning their first cup the following year, a team with a cupboard that is bare at the goaltending position after Crawford. .
As the saying goes, "hard work beats talent unless talent works hard". Never once saw Schmaltz get by on anything other than talent. Not once.
To make it worse one tough little SOB, small, electrifying, dynamic, speed demon, effort, grit, skill, will take an elbow to the mouth for a chance to score, plays all 3 zones,Robbie Fabbri goes the very next pick to St Louis.

Agreed. Not holding my breath for him to be the new 2C or anything, but maybe he's our depth C/PK'er? |

A lot of the so called experts are high on Schmaltz. Who knows. His is rated pretty highly. He set some records in a tournament that has seen some good players go through. Time will tell. - Elbows15
Sounds like he has skills but the ticker sounds iffy. He's young and can grow...blah, blah, Drew LeBlah, but i'd a rather kept the earlier 2nd pick.

Exactly, if he can man 4C, it allows Kruger to move up and Shaw to go back to wing once the 2C experiment fails. |

Meh. The first round is loaded with nothing but question marks. What do you think the latter rounds will have. This is not a deep or very good draft year Phil. Don't sweat it. - Elbows15

Fabrri and Schmaltz are fairly comparable. Maybe the move was just to keep the Blues from getting Schmaltz. - L_B_R
No they're not. Schmaltz is a pure perimeter player with a lot of deke. Fabbri has speed to burn, will win a puck battle, will go into corners, will skate back hard, things Schmaltz won't do.

Based on today's cap news, I'm thinking the Hawks will get back in to the 2nd and 3rd rd tomorrow just like they did last year dealing Bolland and Frolik. |

I really meant in terms of size, which is what people were discussing at the time. Should have clarified. I do enjoy high skill players like that (like Kane) so I'm not too disappointed and hope he turns out well.
EDIT: Not saying Schmaltz is as high skilled as Kane obviously, just that they have similar style in some ways. Thought I'd make that clear. |

If I were a betting man, I believe that the Hawks were indeed hot for Kessler today and came up short.
As such, I am certain that they have had preliminary conversations with UFAs and have some contingent plans in place to pursue. The NHL draft typically does not provide any impact players beyond the 5th pick, so it is not as if the draft is going to change what teams are looking to do to fill immediate needs.
No doubt, they will have to move some salary. I believe that Oduya and Rosival will be gone next season.

>About 20% of all NHL draft picks actually become NHL players
>% goes up for 1st rounders to over 50%
>But, of course, #s vary by each draft year
>Hawks have a good scouting staff and are acquiring players from many different pipelines -- all good to me
>But, I am extremely tired of the bridesmaid role when it comes to acquiring impact, proven NHL players |

I was looking at the organizational depth chart on blackhawks.nhl.com and it doesn't list Dahlbeck. Anyone have any idea why that might be? He's not RFA until next summer, according to capgeek. |

An already suspect defensive depth just got more suspect. Oduya traded out means Leddy to top 4...Hawks will be badly exposed. |

If we needed a wing... - L_B_R
Meh, Blackhawks have been rafting centers that play better at wing or maybe never sniff the nhl for a few years now

That's because he's on the big club's depth chart, not the organizational depth chart. |

That happens and I will start drinking a shot every time Leddy adjusts his helmet. I will be hammered by the first intermission. |
