Sharp would be shipped off to FLA. - CBHawks88
Sharp + Leddy + Clendening + 27th for 1st overall.
Even then...I don't think that gets it done. |

so in the spirit of doom and doom and if not apocalypse now...then it is certainly next year.
Is it possible that when Toews and Kane extensions kick in next year this team may actually be on the decline:
1. Toews/Kane ext hurt them vs the cap
2. Hossa's production continues to drift south
3. Sharp may need to go to pay for Toews/Kane.
4. Seabs and Keith are north of 30.
5. Some of these non-core fail to develop.
Lets say the cap next year is 73 mil: Toews and Kane cost you 8 mil more that gives them a payroll at 72 mil and with Saad, Leddy and Kruger as RFA's which could cost them a combined 9 mil if they keep them. I don't see how they do this. - bogiedoc
The twins have one more season under their current deals...any extension begins with the 2015-2016 season. |

Sharp+ for the 1st overall. - CBHawks88
Sure would be great. Tallon will trade it I think. Not here, though. From the rumors toronto is offering JVR, the 8th overall pick and something else philly wants to make a splash at home offering guys like simmonds or the schenns plus the pick. Should be an exciting 1st 15 minutes to the draft |

IF Kane and Toews get 24 mill combine under a 69 mill cap the Hawks will be lucky to even make the playoffs the roster would be so decimated.
Hey, but at least we did win two Cups. - kwolf68
It wouldn't be a $69m cap when their new contracts kicked in. Concerns would still be warranted for a possible purge next summer, but at least be correct with the fact in your slight hysteria. |

Just seems to me that the Hawks had the bodies in the system to offer what the Canucks would have seen as better than Sbisa and Bonini. The draft pick isn't much. My conclusion is that Bowman and Co., right or wrong, just didn't want him that badly.
So if they were narrowly beaten on Kesler, seems like that leaves them with the best chips on the table to negotiate with Tallon for the #1 pick or with Murray for Spezza. Unless Stan doesn't want to spend any of them, of course. |

It needed to be around $0.97-99. At the time the deal was made, the Canadian dollar was worth slightly more than it is now.
The big dip in 2014 came around Feb/March and has been climbing ever since. Not quite back up to where it was.

Edit: semantic changes. - L_B_R
But what was the $71MM based on - was it the $97-99 when the CBA was signed? Or the $.91 of January?
If it was based on the $.97, that makes them that much stupider. |

Or, your owners told him to stay under the cap to recoup all the money they are paying Gillis, Torts, Booth et al.... that is between $10-20M right?
You were the one who absolutely knew Benning would take nothing less than the 10th pick from Murray weren't you? What is the bat phone saying now? - tredbrta
According to some of the writers and reporters around the league, the Canucks ownership spend some of the highest amount of money on all things outside of player payroll.
You guys here Friedman suggesting Spezza to CHI could still happen? Seems like a tough fit under the cap to me.... |

Sharp is a 0.62/G in the playoffs, Bickell is a 0.59/G player in the playoffs. That's pretty much even... - L_B_R
Sounds like Bickell is the better value, given their cap hits. |

That is a good package. Dale is now in the driver's seat due to the cap number.
Also, will Bowman make that offer? JJ reported only Rosi. Big jump from him to Leddy for Stan. I would do that and add more for the cap space and the pick.
Sometimes you have to overpay.

What would it be then? I got into a discussion with someone who claimed the cap was going up 14 million over next two years. I laughed, asked for evidence, which he was unable to supply and the cap results today were WORSE than even I thought.
You sign 19 and 88 to those high of salaries with THE HOPES of a cap increase...you do so at your own peril. Though I suppose if things got really brutal Kane at 12 mill could easily be traded to Buffalo so we could put someone on our 4th line other than B league beer leaguers.

I assume the $0.97-98 when it was signed because I can't figure it out otherwise. $0.91 is weaker than now (it's at .94 today). And to be fair, the Canadian dollar was trending up/staying steady with the USD for a while there in 2013. I don't know why they didn't revise the numbers when there was a dip unless they thought it would even out faster. I'd love to hear inside information on this, but I doubt it'll be released.
Either way, the number is set and now everyone just has to deal with it. |

If it works put that way, then have to lose more of the core (Keith? Seabrook?), consider the next three or four years to be transitional waiting for the cap to go up and hope a Rockford develops replacements.
Which means maybe (MAYBE) it's best to do nothing (except get under the cap) this summer, hope Shaw/TT/a cheap retread can handle the two open center slots, hope Morin and Versteeg come around, and see what develops.
