How can you not say there are no comparables? Getzlaf and Perry are pretty good comparables
Both have a cup, Perry is a Richard and Hart trophy winner, and Getzlaf was just runner up for the Hart - FourFeathers773
Kane and Toews >>>>>> Getzlaf and Perry.
Not even close. Not even in the same ballpark.
You can't have it both ways....You can't have a large cap increase and then ask your top 2 guys entering their prime to take a friendly deal. Not happening. Any GOOD agent would laugh at a GM who asked for that.
If you want to be pissed....be pissed at Bob Murray for giving Getzlaf and Perry those deals. Once those deals happened, you knew they would be higher. If you didn't, then I feel bad for you.

They have a responsibility to themselves, their families, and their futures to make as much money as they can. They basically have 20 years to make a lifetime worth of money. I realize that to most people the millions they make would be enough, but I don't blame them one bit for asking for $12mil.
The salary cap is going up by $14mil overall this year and the next. Had to expect that they would be around $10mil+ on the cap hit, especially with only being able to sign 8 year deals.
People who call athletes greedy always give me a chuckle. It is their life and I don't know many people who would give up millions a year if they could easily get it elsewhere. - HawkFan27
Yea, that difference between $80 mil and $70 mil on this contract is a real back breaker for life |

When you are among the best in the world at what you do, you have every right to ask for the maximum. I'll never fault a player for looking out for his own interests. We all do the same thing in our jobs. The dollar value is irrelevant. |

It's believed Kane-Toews initial ask of CHI on extension is around $12M/yr each. They'll end up lower but still could be $10M+ AAV players. - FourFeathers773
I guess that squashes all the fabricated illusions of the 'hometown discount' that everyone thinks their players will take because 'they want to win' |

Im not acknowledging this anymore. This is where the blackhawk homer goes into full bore
If you think Toews and Kane are miles better than Perry and Getlaf, well then I have a bridge to sell you. Take off the red goggles buddy and watch more hockey - FourFeathers773
I think Toews/Kane ARE the best duo in the NHL, no argument there. But I don't think they should get get 40-50% MORE than Perry/Getzlaf.
Ducks also have associated salaries that are amazing. We are paying a LOT of coin to many other players, unlike the Ducks whose next highest salary is Fowler at 4 MILLION. We have like EIGHT players making at least what their 3rd highest paid player, and 7 of them well more. |

Getzlaf and Perry signed when the cap was lower, as did Crosby Malkin etc. The cap rising at this point in time means Toews and Kane lucked out and when the cap rises again it means the next star players up for negotiation will be luckier and appear to some to be greedier than Kane and Toews. |

To quote Jules Winnfield, "Not even in the same f'in sport". Ask 30 GMs to pick between Kane and Toews vs Getzlaf and Perry, and even Bob Murray picks #19 & #88. |

No one should be begrudging them for going higher than those other players, but it is NOT YET given the cap is going up by X amount. I can just see it now...Toews and Kane sign ridiculously expensive deals in speculation cap rises, then "the numbers come in" and it DOES NOT rise.

The reason why they will get more than Perry/Getzlaf doesn't have to do with how much better Kane/Toews are than those two. It has to do with Kane/Toews signing contracts after the new TV deal was announced and after revenues continue to grow. At the time, the $8.5 (around that) cap hit for Perry/Getzlaf seemed too high, now it seems like a pretty damn good deal. Same reason we are seeing Hossa/Keith with an absurdly low cap hit. These players were all signed at different times. |

It's $10,000,000.
10MM.
TEN MILLION DOLLARS.
How many business executives, movie stars, recording artists, sports franchise owners ever willingly give up $10MM.
Only the athletes get blasted for asking for top value. |

Do you really think they will be signed before the cap is known? That is Bowman's biggest bargaining chip with these guys simply because they can only sign for a certain percentage of the cap. |
|
|
|
If Kane and Toews get those kinds of deals then maybe we should sell the farm (for Kessler, Spezza) and go for it all next year. This would be our last chance for a long time at least until inflation catches up with these numbers.
Forget about signing your 2nd tier players when their contracts are up. Kane and Toews better prepare themselves for a lot of double shifting when they find they have no 3rd and 4th lines to play with.
For those wanting to know why Bowman is doing nothing in the player market, here is your answer. His hands are tied. He has to try to fill out a team facing these kinds of circumstances.
These new contracts better not include movement clauses. |

Nobody is saying anything official and final yet - just projecting based on the preliminary (almost) $7MM increase for 2014-15, and projecting out the next year including the increase in revenues from the new Canadian TV contract - and hoping the value of the loonie doesn't decrease dramatically.
But - it's all still "assuming" right now. |

My point is, a $70 mil deal would put them both at $110 mil career earnings at the end of the new deal, and thats just salary/bonuses from playing hockey, not counting other stuff
At what point do you say, Ive already made $80 mil or whatever and I dont really need the extra $10 mil
I work in advertising and we were negotiating with Bill Murray to be an endorser of one of our events, and his agent said, "he just wants to find work he's interested in, he doesnt care about money, he's already made enough money in his life"

Yeah, this is a fun/aggravating time of the year. Lot's of hopes, a couple of Cups, and decades of frustration. I'm 45, so I always remember how close they were during the Keenan years specifically, only to have Lucy (Bill Wirtz) pull the ball away. This time is precious, and I want them to get as much out of this period as possible. How knows how long it will before they can acquire this much talent and win. |

Hopeful speculation. Has Gaborik EVER played a full season? Of course he has...
I see very little diff between he and Hossa...Hossa is making slightly more, for longer years and if you don't see the tread wearing on his tires then grab some glasses.
It's a gamble BOTH teams have to take with elite talent. The Kings hope Gab will play most of the season and in the playoffs and the Hawks hope Hossa's propensity to miss games doesn't extend past the few each year.
Both Hossa and Garorik have GREAT cap hits, but BOTH will suck in a few years + Hossa is 3 years older. NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE. If you are gonna rag the Kings for the Gab deal, ditto for the Hossa deal. - kwolf68
agree completely - plus gab didn't look to fragile in the playoffs - guy was in front of the net constantly and kept going back there |
