I like either, though you may need to add a pick/prospect to both.

I'd take those two on the Hawks in a heartbeat. Then depending on cap space and if he is bought out, sign Mike Richards and sign free agent Jay McClemment and move out Bollig. The Hawks would be set with strong depth additional penalty killing personnell and that elusive number 2 center.

All right, it's great to see this blog so actively followed weeks after the Hawks are eliminated. I missed all last nights rap but I'm am awake now. Why can't Saad be a Center? Usually they say it's easier to move a center to the wing than a wing to the center, but I don't see why Brandon Saad isn't skilled enough, physical enough, or smart enough to make the transition.

I'd take 2 of the 3 for sure; Nielsen and either Richards/McClement. Depending on the cap hit would be great to have Richards as a 3C and you could move Krugs back to 4C.

Martin is a better version of Bollig so if they could move him that would be great.

You could have a valid point. But talking about moving Saad to center makes for far less interesting posts as to what players Hawks fans don't want for star centers on other teams.

If I'm not mistaken, Saad has never played at center - throughout his Junior career up until now. That's a lot to ask the kid too learn...

I suppose, but as a life long hockey player with the skills to make it in the NHL, it's just another job. The best brick guy in the world can probably work ok with stones, too...

Let's make Saad a center.

Let's make Shaw a center.

Let's make a Smith a center.

Let's make every wing a center.

Instead of going out and actually getting a center.

Here is your 2014-2015 line up.

Ladd-Kesler-Pacioretty
Vrbata-Nielsen-Simmonds.
Pouliet-Eller-McNeil
Bollig-Kruger-Smith

Seabrook-Hjalmarsson
Johns-Oduya
Fayne-Dahlbeck
Rozy

Crawford
Reimer

Q retired..sorry. And amazingly. Tampon is the new head coach. After all, he has 2 rings.

I think they have a shot.

Elbows was given the helm for a day and this is what you missed.

For instance, if Sharp had moved to center full time 4 years ago, he would have eventually done well. I have the same thoughts about Saad, and frankly, he profiles quite well as a center. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

This! It would solve the center depth issues we're all complaining about.

So it's not just as simple as "go and do this," is it?

No, you're missing my point.

First, let's go back and take a look at the past 30yo+ players who won the Conn Smythe from the last 15 years and see how much they made on their next contracts.

Scott Niedermeyer - $6.5 mil
Tim Thomas - $6 mil
Nick Lidstrom - $7.6 mil
Patrick Roy - $8.5 mil
Scott Stevens - $6.9 mil

You pay the player based on what he has done for you lately. Justin Williams has been one of the best players on the team in all facets of the game. You don't have to sign him for 8 years, but you pay the man what he's worth. $5.8 mil/season for 2-3 seasons is not unreasonable for the MVP on a cup winning team.

At this point, Stoll and Richards are fighting for the same spot in the lineup. If I had to choose one for my team, I'd take Richards in a heartbeat, especially if their contract values are in the same neighborhood. Stoll is a solid 3C, but I don't see Lombardi offering him $5+ million, otherwise we're one "bad" season away from being in the same boat we are currently in with Richards. Paying over $5 mil for an underperforming 3rd line center.

Makes sense. Williams has been a playoff beast consistently.

Oh, I know my metaphor is flawed, I'm just saying. If a physical, hard skating beast like Saad could do it, it would be a great solution in my opinion. BTW, I am not making an argument as much as trying to think out a solution. Where better to try that than here, with the experts.
