Life could be worse you could be discussing Bryz right now. If you do want MAF replaced just be very, very sure that you don't get stuck on the goalie carousel. It's easy to do - and it's the nightmare train that never seems to end.

Any of my trade proposal posts have involved taking existing parts, moving them for multiple pieces in return, and/or cap space.

With that said, I'd be up for moving MAF for something like the following scenario assuming Reimer (or equivalent) is the return:

- Acquire Reimer for late round draft pick. Sign to $2.5 mill per for 2 years. His motivation: win a cup and parlay that into big contract in 2 years.
- Move MAF for a 3rd line player making $2 mill or so per.
- You have an extra $500K to help acquire another player.

2 players + some cap space for the price of one.

Now, move Scuds out too. Him + the above $500K and you have $4.25 to play with. Say that allows you to get Cammy (for argument).

Resign Goc. MAF to Van for Kassian (or something similar).

You have the following pieces and only need to acquire one more 4th line player.

Sid-Kunitz-Bennet
Malkin-Neal-Cammy
Kassian - Sutter - Duper
Goc-Gibbons-4th liner with some size

Martin-Letang
Maatta-Borts
Despres-Pouliot
Smlson-Doum

Reimer/Zat

Still not a Cup team IMO but closer. I guess it depends on what you could get back from dealing MAF.

There aren't a lot of trade partners for MAF if you really look at it.

I'd look elsewhere for a roster upgrade and also the change in the team's DNA. Don't know if moving MAF does that.

In that scenario I would probably rather trade Fleury for the top 6 guy (if possible). And use Scuderi's money on third liners like Pouliot/Kulemin.

I guess the biggest question is what is Fleury's market value? Would you trade him for a forward and then sign a UFA goalie? Or trade him straight up for a goalie with less 'pedigree' but similar stats and cheaper?

I don't want to mimic anything Philly has done. Including turning all their players into ginger bearded pirates.

I like Sutter and with the right supporting cast on his line he is a valuable player. What is he worth? That's where the real speculation starts.
- powerhouse

I think he is an average NHL third line center. And 3rd line centers should not be paid more than $3 million unless they are truly dominant in their roles, IMO.

Teams that would realistically consider another goalie:

- Van
- Buffalo
- Calgary
- Edmonton
- San Jose
- Wash

I think the Caps could certainly use some help. Their goalie guru Trotz brought with him is supposed to be pretty good. Perhaps he could help MAF?

- 87_71_11_29

Calgary does a sign and trade with Cammy and a 2nd for flower and scuds. Then everyone is happy lol

I hope they keep Despres. I'm undecided with Sutter, it depends how they plan to fix the bottom 6. I can't see someone offer sheeting him, he wouldn't be worth the picks you would have to give up to sign him to a 3+ mil a season contract.

what about games played, or wins?

64 games vs 20, and 39 wins vs 12, no discrepency there, youre right lets trade him for some joke rookie and rely on zhatkoff, thatll work out real well

- JLT168

pretty sure I didn't say any of that, maybe read all the posts first.

smaller sample size for sure but the numbers are still similiar

I agree with the old saying "better the devil you know, than the devil you don't". I don't see a lot of good options for replacing MAF. I still believe if the team plays a much more simpler game with a focus on team defense it will go a long way in solving some of our problems.

I'll add this.... The Pens disappointing post seasons this year and last weren't the result of poor goaltending.

That was the question. I have no idea what he is worth :-).

Its kind of congruent with the James Neal situation. A team desperate to get into the playoffs might pay a premium for him, I dunno.

Any goalie for goalie swaps make sense?

Fleury isn't going anywhere. Its pretty much like saying Craig Adams shouldn't dress next game. Base one blog not on Corsi or Fenwick or player usage charts. Actually that's even more like saying Craig Adams shouldn't dress next game.

not really sure what youre trying to prove with that chart about the cap hits of the goalies of the cup winners...

2009- MAF- Entry level contract
2010- Niemi- Entry level
2011- Thomas- 5 million cap hit
2012- Quick- Entry level
2013- Crawford- one exception, this was a brilliant signing by Bowman at the time to get him for that
2014- Quick- Above MAF's cap hit.

maybe i'm missing something?

Maybe just that all these teams, ELC or not, had goalies who weren't eating up a big % of the cap.

that's all well and good... but these results say you either need a goalie on ELC or a goalie making good money to win.

last time i checked, James Riemer doesnt fit either of those.

If you ask me it's a sad day where 40 point players like Cammy and Hemsky are looking at $5 Million.

That's a dumb move on Stevens part. Sticking with a team in hopes to get a "future" job in the NHL might not exactly work out the way you think it will.

TIOPS is confirming that they've interviewed Crawford, Renney, Wilson, Hynes, Peters and Ulf....either by phone or in person. They've also asked and received permission to speak with Desjardins.

It's even a sadder day when fans of a team with a 40 goal scorer signed at a great contract are hoping to move the guy for 3rd liners and draft picks.

I have my issues with Neal. He vanishes when he isn't riding shotgun with Malkin which has me wondering if we have more a Cheechoo situation on our hands. But I would rather have Neal then Kulemin.

But at the same time if the Penguins have to move a $5 million dollar player I would rather it be Neal over Fleury.

Sutter is a 20 goal scorer on a depleted Hurricanes team his rookie year. Every team that has had him, and not desperately needed a scoring center, has shoehorned him into the defensive role. I would love to see him get the chance to play freely again. He was a heck of a lot of fun to watch his rookie year.

Well said, thank you for the reminder of what he can do offensively. Should he move up a line, or two?
