Hextall's to do list

1. Acquire top pairing defenseman
2. Add top 6 wing
3. Find a taker for VL
4. Find a taker for Grossman

- PLindbergh31

If he manages to do two of those things, he's had a pretty good offseason, IMO.

Rest assured, the Flyers are not in rebuild mode.
- MJL

Looks like the Sharks are going into rebuild mode, why not the Flyers?

Im not not sure Coburn gets moved unless there's plan "B" already in place.
- landros 2

Agreed.

I don't get the whole "Trade Coburn" thing from Flyers fans.

The real impetus for change is probably their poop prospect pool... they've raided it for years to make run after run... they've probably hit a tipping point there simultaneous with the window on their current core swinging shut.
- Tomahawk

Or maybe Wilson simply feels the window is shut with this particular group and it's time to blow it up.

Looking at the landscape of the Western Conference, I don't know if San Jose is going to go any further with their current group.

Okay, let's trade Giroux, Voracek, and Simmonds to get younger and start all over!

Why stop there? Trade everyone over the age of 20.

SJs core is also Thorton, Marleau, Boyle. Compared to Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds, Courturier, Schenn.

Also have people not noticed that you need a mix. How has all the youth in EDM worked with no leadership. On ice and FO

I'm just surprised that San Jose is calling it a "rebuild". I see them similar to the Flyers needs where they just need adjust minor things.

In my general travels I hear a lot of "trade Brayden Schenn for a bag of pucks he's useless" talk.

I'm like, a 22 year old kid who scored 20 goals in his first full NHL season? Really? Im all for trading him if get gets us a solid all situations defenseman, (which is what Coburn is!!!!!), but the bag of pucks talk sounds like WIP nonsense again. Most of the idiots who listen to that station get angry when a 4th liner isn't scoring 30 goals.

As for trading Coburn, he is our defacto #1 guy. The grass is always greener.

You don't have a morbid curiosity to see how a top-pair of AMac/Niskanen fares against Sid/Geno/JT/Stamkos/OV?

Just thinking about some of the stuff I read yesterday and I freely admit I'm totally effing confused. I need someone to walk me through the answer here:

The hypothesis is that the Flyers, if they aren't going to win the Cup this season or next, should jettison their veteran pieces for picks in order to have a better/more open window of contention a few years down the line.

My questions are these:

1. Didn't we do that when Richards, Carter and Bob got moved for young players and the picks the Flyers used to get Couturier, Stolarz, Cousins and Ghost, as well as young players in Voracek, Simmonds and Brayden Schenn?

2. If the answer to that question is yes, then how would us doing another rebuild be any different two years from now, when any number of the fanbase can't wait to dangle Schenn in a deal before he is fully developed?

3. How are we reconciling the fact that some of us want to shed veteran pieces for this new rebuild...but we just re-signed a 39-year-old defenseman? And by doing so, why did anyone want that to happen if you just want to trade his defense partner?

I guess I just don't understand what we are wanting, here. We've already started the rebuild -- we're two-plus years into it! They've identified a goalie, and there's only one Top 9 forward over 27 years old. The defense is lagging a bit, but they've spent the last two years drafting them with high picks and they are developing.

Again, I'm just confused. I don't get how people want to shed Brayden Schenn AND Braydon Coburn -- one is a young player who we don't want to wait to see develop, and the other is a top -pair defenseman that you need to win now -- and there are some of us who want to move them both!

How does that even work?

- AllInForFlyers

Wasn't it just the peanut that said he wanted to rebuild?

I've been fairly critical of Brayden Schenn, but not to the point of trading him unless something of significance (young stud d-man) comes back the other way. I was expecting (fairly or unfairly) more from him at this point, given his junior hockey pedigree.

But unless that magical trade for a young, talented defenseman falls into Hextall's lap, I'm fine trying to ride out BSchenn's development.

The Flyers aren't "looking for a taker" for Grossmann. Berube likes him a lot. The org likes and is comfortable with him in their top six. Talk to Mason about how good Grossmann is helping him out around the net by tying players up or clearing traffic to let him see shots. That doesn't mean Grossmann wouldn't be traded depending on what else they are doing, but they are not looking to unload him just for the sake of doing so.
