That's fantastic!! I mean does anyone think that the Flyers could sign a UFA as good as Kimmo for 2 million??
Yeah, I didn't think so!!

Are you going to be happy if the Flyers have to carry a bonus overage of up to 2M bucks on the Cap for the 15/16 season?

I think I get what you're saying, but not sure. But Cap space is never saved using LTIR. A lot is going to depend on other moves they make this off season, and what the in season roster looks like. - MJL
Hypothetical. If the Flyers wanted to create more cap space, could they place Grossmann on waivers? If he cleared, could he be sent to the Phantoms and his salary be off the cap, a la Matt Walker under the old CBA?

Which quality should have more weight considered is a different argument. In the premise proposed hockey sense and determination would be equal between the two players in the hypothetical. And I disagree that a smaller player likely has more talent. Not always true. But again, that was not part of the premise.
Welcome to the site. - MJL
IMO no single variable should be taken out by itself and weighed more than others. Context is important. The size of a player means a lot, I don't want to devalue that at all. I'm just saying that if at a given point in the draft the "all things being equal go with the bigger player" argument has a fallacy in the argument. If all things were equal the bigger player would be drafted way earlier than the smaller. So you can see that if the situation really did occur that there were 2 players that were equal in every way except size, it's a no brainer that you take the bigger player. I'm saying that situation will never happen as the bigger but equal player will have a much higher draft ranking.

Only $925K would come off the cap if no one claimed him.

BURIED CONTRACTS (Wade Redden Rule)
Money paid to players outside of the NHL counts against the cap.
A one-way contract counts against the cap as follows:
cap hit – [ minimum salary + $375,000 ] |

Wade Redden rule. The only thing the Flyers would save would be the NHL minimum salary + 375K off of grossmann's cap hit. The rest would be carried on the Flyers cap as dead cap space. |

No doubt in my mind Hextall promised him a cup. That's why he signed for 2m.
Hextall going to make some trades - Winning
I think his wife wants no part of moving unless it's to go home and no part of living apart for a season. So it's here or home to Finland. |

Well the odds are that there will always be a number of factors that separate one player from another. That's why it's a hypothetical premise. And the premise that I offered is that there is a choice between drafting two players, with all things being equal except for significant size difference. Throwing all these other variables into it, obviously changes the premise a great deal. And that's a different conversation. |

I thought that loop hole would be changed, just wasn't sure how it was adjusted. I don't expect just bringing back Kimmo as the only movement along the blueline.

I really wish Snider had thrown his political weight around during the lockout to get a rewrite on the over 35 contract injury rule. Allow Pronger to retire and come off the cap. This is not like some ambulance chasing paind & suffering lawsuit in civil court, he is disabled from being able to work at his profession.
Considering all the garbage the Devs get away with (and some other teams in rescinded league rulings) there needs to be some consideration.
You cant buy out injured players but have to carry them like an albatross or some other creature or burden
But we can ship tons of money to failing teams culled from season tickets that are purchased here to make Gary happy.
You got your stinking TV deal 20 years late moron, now fess up and right your wrongs

Ok so wtf is this bonus overage thing. The 2 mil in bonuses counts against the cap also? So it's like another contract with a 2 mil hit basically for next year even if he doesn't play? |

If he earns the performance-based bonuses, they count against this year if there is room under the cap. If they don't fit under the cap this season, they'll be counted against next season. |

The bonus cushion is available in every season for the current CBA. The performance bonus cushion allows teams to exceed the upper limit with performance bonuses to a maximum of 7.5 percent of the upper limit. Once earned they are then added to the team's final cap number for that season. If they push a team over the upper limit, the amount over must be carried as a penalty on the following season's cap. Boston is going to have carry around 4M on next years' cap for signing Jerome Iginla this season.

Hey guys. I've been an everyday reader for over 5 years now. Bill (if you are even reading this late in the blog), everyone's praise of you is absolutely spot on... you're the best hockey writer I have ever read, not just for the Flyers either.
I usually back read way late in the day, so I never comment, but I just had to in this debate about drafting bigger players when all else is equal, sorry if I'm Leight. If all variables are the same and the player is bigger, you won't be talking about drafting them at the same range. If Giroux was 6'4" and 220 with exactly the same skill set, we are talking about a Lindros type generational talent. At G's size he falls in the draft because there has to be doubt about matching up against the big boys. That being said if we are talking about a player being taken at 17 overall, 2nd, or 3rd round then imo size shouldn't be the automatic tiebreaker.
The smaller player most likely has more talent and the bigger player has more of an NHL build, but is the bigger player ranked where he is because of playing against smaller players that when in the NHL will fade into the background? Likewise is the smaller player too easy to knock off the puck and will be limited to a very good AHL player? I believe what Tomahawk said about hockey sense and determination being a better tie breaker. It's much harder to quantify than size, but in today's NHL I believe would be a better place to pay attention to.
Apologies for a long first post... - mmcclatchy

It's complicated but I think the cap hit next year will be under a million of he does get the bonus. (i.e. if he doesn't get hurt) |

He may be. And it's great that he's coming back. Majority of it is great. But the potential bonus overage penalty is a negative to the contract. |

Also Vinny is a 20 goal scorer making 4m. You will be able to trade him for something. Why you people want to give him away is dumb - Winning
Go look at the reddit mock draft. It's not quite the same thing, but Vinny has attracted interest, and teams are offering decent packages.
"The Dallas Stars have offered 2014 4th, 2015 3rd and Vernon Fiddler for Vinny Lecavalier if we retain some of Vinny's salary."
"The Nashville Predators have offered their 1st, Paul Gaustad and Ryan Ellis for Brayden Schenn, Vinny Lecavalier and our 1st."
I don't think so many people view Vinny as a black mark to stay away from. |
