They could easily sign a bigger 3rd line guy for cheaper than they'll pay Gionta.

The only intangibles he has are being small and shooting weak wrist shots from the wing.

I don't really know who's available but it's always risky to hope the FA market will fill your voids.

we've seen a pretty steep decline in Gionta's skills over the last 2 years. he's gone from a guy who can score 25-30 to an 18-goal player. and who is to say that decline won't continue? and i agree that this is an opportunity to add some size to the club.

for sure. but third liners are always available for trade in the offseason, especially when you have teams looking to shed a bit of salary.

It's risky when you want to fill 1st-2nd line or D pairings with FAs...3rd-4th line guys are pretty easy to find.

you'd have to make sure that the Leaf stink has been sufficiently scrubbed from his body. probably needs to go to NASA for that.

And a guy like Jussi Jukinen could be great on the 2nd line.

He's one inch and 2 pounds from not being a midget, but still.

Why would another team trade you a good third liner with would gets the job done and is cheaper than Gionta?

You are gonna get a guy who's not really playing up to expectations, a Travis Moen of sorts.

Unless Bergevin can pull another Diaz for Weise.

With the season and playoffs he's had he's not gonna be cheap...plus playing with Malkin kind of boosted his stats.

maybe they'll get rid of Briere still. who knows. just don't see the appeal of old, small players in steep decline.
- Gary_B.

35+ contract.

Doubtful.

If they really want another midget they could sign PM Bouchard for cheap or give a shot to Andrighetto instead of Gionta...
