Slower is better. That's always the case.
Your cousin's 3 year old son heckled a Rangers fan at the park today. You should be very proud. |

The only d-men I want brought in here are those of an upper caliber. No more of this mediocre poop, or overpaying for guys who you continuously have to try and hide one way or another.
If they trade or sign a FA on D, it needs to be a young kid like Josi or an established guy like Giordano. To me in FA you overpay for a guy like Suter not a guy like Niskanen.
If you build you team with guys who always have warts to crucial parts of their game, you get what we have seen. To me its about making a team of the right players, and not just those that are best available and let you make round 1 of the playoffs. - flyer_nutter
I just mean as a placeholder until the young guys develop. I really think that anyone other than Lauridsen coming up to play with the big club is a really bad idea. I don't think that our defense will look so bad if we build a forwards corps of something like...
Jussi Jokinen ($3.500m) / Claude Giroux ($8.275m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.750m) / Brayden Schenn ($2.750m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
Benoit Pouliot ($3.000m) / Sean Couturier ($1.750m) / Matt Read ($3.625m)
Michael Raffl ($1.100m) / Scott Laughton ($0.863m) / Nick Cousins ($0.812m)
Jay Rosehill ($0.675m) / Zac Rinaldo ($0.750m)
...to actually play some solid two way hockey. Anything to keep the kids in the AHL from being forced to play in the NHL.
Edit: Cousins is just an 800k placeholder up there. |

The problem with your theory is, Detroit allows young players to spend years in the AHL developing, and they sign as many free agents as any one.
Also, prior to the last couple of drafts, the Flyers had a significant lack of young defensemen that were NHL ready. Part of that was due to trading for Pronger and his subsequent injury. Part of it was the organization going the safer route in the draft and taking forwards who generally develop faster than defensemen & goalies.
The best thing they can do for these young defensemen is to let them get a ton of minutes in the AHL. Spot them in at the NHL level when injuries arise. Despite having several good young defense prospects, it's not as if they have a future Doughty on hand. - Jsaquella
All true. It depends on when the young players are ready to roll.
I wont pretend to watch the Phantoms but from the bit I have read, it seems Lauridsen/Alt and maybe Ghost are ready to move up. I'd like to see at least 1 give a full time shot this year.

Yeah I wasn't sure who to put on the fourth line so I just picked the most expensive call up cap geek had to offer to fill the spot. I like Akeson and might have to waive rosehill to afford him or a UFA fourth line guy.
Edit: But other than that I think that that line up can play some solid two way hockey |

I see Lauridsen as a tweener, much like Tye McGinn. He's not really much of a prospect. I could see them using him as a cheap 7th defenseman this season.
Alt has had one year of pro hockey. Gostisbehere has had 1 game. I have no issue giving them a shot, but I'm going to make sure I cover myself because they have a limited amount of experience. It's not like Alt or Gostisbehere have been in the AHL for 3 years. |

I'd really like to see Alt push for a roster spot next year, but didn't get to watch much of him this past year to speak on how his development went & if he has a realistic chance.

Fiddler is a small deal, and I do think they would get some good years out of guys who can actually carry the puck in Vrbata/Jokinen.
You can kind of tell who I dislike on the current team from that line-up. |

I want all of them to push for a spot. It'd be great if Alt or Lauridsen can step in and provide solid third pair play. Not sure I want to count on them doing so, though |

Fiddler is close to $2mm per year. Why sign him when you can have Hall, Laughton or Raffl and spend the cash on a good second pair guy like Stralman? |

It's a fine line. It's difficult to find a 6th defenseman who is good enough to play in the top 6, but not good enough to force Alt to the minors under all circumstances. |

I enjoy having a fourth line that can actually contribute, and I don't need to twist my pubes every time they are on the ice in fear of them taking a dumb penalty or giving up a goal.
Im kind of along the lines of Stralman being already more of what they have. Overpaid mediocrity. I personally don't believe in that kind of defensive group long term. |
