This is per a poster on TIOPS, so take it with a grain (or shovel full) of salt:
Sources are telling me the pens plan to hire Botterill as GM who will handle roster, salary cap, FA, etc and they will also hire McGuire as the head of development which will include drafting, scouting, and development. - errey12
As long as PM is seen and not heard I'm okay with that... All I like TBs asst GM for the job... He helped transform TB the last 5 yrs in draft picks... |

The Penguins will not be drafting where Tampa was. In the past 6 years Tampa has had the 1st overall, 2nd overall, and 3rd overall pick. Additionally they have had the 6th overall and 10th overall. Penguins in all likelihood won't have anything lower than 15ish |

I can see Tiops scenario working out well, heck I actually really like it. |

I like him for scouting and a behind the scenes guy, I can't think of anyone who can spout off numbers like him and I think he'd be a good fit. As a gm, negative.
He'd also be off my tv. |

What would you guys think of trying to sign Mike Richards or RJ Umberger for the third line this summer? Umberger has requested a trade but that is unlikely to happen with his cap hit. There is talk that both might be bought out by their teams.
Both would add scoring to the bottom 6 and both fall under that grit area that the team appears to be heading towards. If both are bought out, they will still be paid handsomely, so money might not be that crazy to sign one or both.
I think that Sutter proved in the playoffs that he can contribute offensively if he has some help on his line. |

i doubt richards is bought out. i'd trade for richards if the price was right. i have always liked him.
umberger i would consider. guy could be a ryan malone type player for malkin's wing. malkin needs a guy who will crash the net. if umberger is able to be that guy and for good money, i'd do it. |

When I think of Pierre McGuire and the draft I always think back to him losing his mind over the Islanders drafting Robert Nilsson ahead of Zach Parise. |

Yeah that is the other end of the spectrum. I think Price is a top 5 goalie in the league. And other than Anze Kopitar no one else is near Price's level until you hit Rask at 21 and then Neal, Letang and Quick later in the draft. |
|
|
|
like seriously, i know some people overvalue their team's assets... but i just saw a penguins poster say that he would have to THINK about Eberle and the 3rd overall pick for Letang and a 2nd rounder.
my goodness. people are great. |

yea Rask, Price, and Quick all in the same draft class is remarkable.
if you take out crosby, you could argue that the 2nd and 3rd rounds produced just as many good players as the 1st round. that was a great draft year.
but as for Pierre, i would be perfectly fine with him taking up drafting and scouting. clearly what we've been doing hasnt been working so i would be interested to see what his draft strategy would be.
JB i think would be a good GM for us as long as he fires Bylsma. If he retains DB and keeps things similar then we are wasting our time. There were a lot of things that Shero did right and hopefully JB brings them with him. but there were equally as many things that he did wrong and if JB learns from them and sees their failures, then i think the job should be his. |

@MikeColligan: @GunnerStaal he spends every day on the road covering the NHL, how much JR hockey do you think he actually watches vs what he says he does? |

Assuming the message is about Pierre?...I'd say he knows more than most and if his focus is strictly on the junior players then he would be a quality asset. He'd just have to do less "that's a double Dion"!!! |

I'm sure some "insiders" likely think that way, but I'm gonna keep the blinders off on this one simply because other clubs have interviewed him in the past for a high position.
Edit: There's also the people doing the interviews. If it's strictly Burkle, Moorehouse, and Lemieux, those guys aren't hiring a nutjob for any positiin within the organization with the position those three are in now. This is as dicey a situation as the arena talks. |

my friend told me today that the NHL has been indirectly pressuring the Penguins to get a new GM before the first game of the Cup finals. They hate having big news take the wind out of the sail of the finals.
So me speculating thinks that we could see an announcement either late monday or early tuesday depending on who they still need to talk to. |

Hey! Someone is on here.
The Pens have traditionally done a mid-morning presser, but I'm betting if Botterril is named it's low key and Bob McK will break it well beforehand. I'm certain the Pens want nothing to do with any extra publicity these days. Get it right and talk about it later type of thing. |
