Getting a move balanced lineup will allow him to use Couts more in scoring situations.
- PhillySportsGuy

This is true.

Hopefully there's somebody to take some of the heavy load off of Coots this season... whether it's Laughton or somebody they bring in like Malhotra... Coots (and Read) are being buried in defensive responsibility with no help at all.

As long as they try it in camp/preseason, sure.

Why would you want to cut Vorachek's PP time?

All this concern with the second PP unit is misplaced. It's great if you have a group to come out and maybe score in that last 45 to 30 seconds but let's get the puck in the net with the first unit and make it not matter. I'm not going out of my way to improve the second unit in the face of down grading the first.

- mayorofangrytown

I dont think it would have been downgrading the top unit. How many times does Jake flub a one timer or overpass or become reluctant to shoot?

I love Jake and I think he's our 2nd best forward. I would just like to see him run the 2nd unit like Giroux runs the top unit.

If they move VL, it doesn't matter because they likely won't have anyone on that side capable of being a sniper.

Are you saying sign Niskanen for 3-3.5M? If so, might want to double that number.
And Coburn's cap hit is 4.5M, not 5.5M.

sweet (frank) i wish thats all it took.

It would help if they just have balance throughout the lineup. It would be nice if Berube could roll the lines without too much thought. Thats what the Rangers do and thats what the Flyers did when they went to the Cup Finals with Frick and Frack.

Even VL wasn't capable of being a sniper this year. I think he only had one or two goals from his big slap shot all year.

1 bad PP in a playoff game and people will be clamoring for it.

But really, it's hard to gauge true effectiveness in the preseason because half of the guys on the other team will be back in the ECHL in 2 weeks. So the other time to give it a true test would be during a 3-4 game stretch in the regular season, and as we saw last year, you can't be pissing points away.

He scored that OT goal vs. Washington. That was, you know, kinda cool. I guess.

I always thought he was the opposite. Whenever I see the PP unit out there, Voracek is usually the guy who shoots. Giroux mostly passes it. Timonen does onetime it but rarely hits the net, Hartnell and Simmonds are more or less the guys who screen the goalie and grab the rebounds. If Vinny is still around that is worth a try still.
- xShoot4WarAmpsx

Jake has never been a great shooter. He has a decent shot and can be deceptive with it.

His shooting percentage jumped to 17% last season, but he's been around 9% for his career.

So in your opinion, taking the second best forward off the top PP unit and reducing his man advantage time by, oh, about 70% (reasonable guess) is a good move for the team?

I think he still has a good shot. He just didn't create as many opportunities as he used to.

He had 8 PP goals on a pretty bad 2nd unit. Many of those came off one timers.

1. I'm not saying it's good for Jake's overall numbers. I just think it would be better for the team.

2. Just because he is the 2nd best forward doesn't mean he needs to be on the top unit. Jeff Carter was either our best or 2nd best forward for years and spent much of his time on the 2nd unit.

3. The 2nd unit PP time would increase with Jake on it.

the flyers didnt do more clutching and grabbing than an over eager prom date that year though.

but my god if they had won a cup with leights in net. i might have had to move

this is a debate with the pens all the time too.

crosby and malkin would both be much more effective running their own units. but realistically, the time would never be evenly split.

they have a handful of scrappers who are hard to not respect. but still, their whole style is complete and utter bullpoop.

i dont hate them for their stars aligning as far as scheduling goes. the east is pitiful right now. anyone could have made a run, especially once MTL knocked out boston. i truly think if boston didnt have to play the habs they'd already have the conference locked up.

i hate them for how they play the game, and i hate that they are permitted to do it.
