As long as you budget/plan around the overage, as the Bruins seem to have, it shouldn't be much of a problem. Even if it's only $500k-1M in bonuses, that could mean room for an extra roster player or enough to make call-ups for the year.

Just means you don't give more bonuses out than you can afford to absorb the following season -- likewise you save room for the possible overage in your future budget projections with the assumption that all bonuses will be achieved.

Flyers obviously can't give out a bonus as large as Iginla's, since our near-term salary structure is nowhere near as sound, but they can afford a little bit here and there.

My question was rhetorical. There is no amount of bonuses that the Flyers can afford to absorb the following season. That's the point.

In my opinion, that's the type of move a team makes when they feel the player is a key piece needed as a legitimate cup contender. I don't see the Flyers in that position. Offer him a fair base salary, and that's it.

You can also count on the Pens and Rangers picks getting booed. Probably even a "Crosby Sucks" chant.

All in all, it's an excuse to go on a Friday night, wear your O&B stuff on a summer day, and talk a bit of hockey.

Yeah, I don't think I'd stay past Round 3. That's likely where the Flyer pick "Zac 3."

If we get a couple of players for Coby ($5.5 mil), at about $1.5 mil, and don't resign Timonen ($6 mil), maybe we could sign Niskanen ($3-3.5 mil)?

That would leave:
MacD, Streit, Schenn, Grossman, Niskanen, and (Alt, Belov, or Ceci ?)

I realize that this is not the greatest D in the league, however, you have one stay at home guy paired with one mobile guy, and it has to be better than it was during the last few years.
Also, you have to get our lazy forwards to consistently play D on every shift. This D line up would allow more cap space, and flexibility with the pairings. Also, if a player starts to slump, then you can bring someone else up to shock them into better play, and allow the kids to develop a little longer.

Given the expected rise in the cap, I have no problem with giving an incentive-laden contract to Timonen. While it's not optimal, any carryover into the 15/16 season should be partially negated by his (probable) retirement. You still have to fill his place, but it's not the end of the world...sort of.
