A lot of people are bringing up Malkin trade talk? If that was to be done, it would have been done before Staal was traded. We picked one over the other and we dont have the proper depth to lose him and you wouldn't get the value to fill in for Malkin in return.
I know Weber is a top 5 D, but you are losing a top 5 player in Geno, so I would have to say no.
You also have to trade the rights to Niskanen to get additional pick/picks. If Tyler Kennedy can snag a 2nd round selection, Nisky can too. Package some picks and a prospect and make a move up in the draft to select a top flight nhl ready winger. That would be a good move for cap reasons but I doubt they can pull it off.
James Neal still has value as a true shooter and you can get talent in return. For his AAV you can get a pick/prospect and current roster player.
Sign Sutter, 4mill AAV on a three year prove me type deal.
Finally, get a net front crashing winger. I personally think Moulson, despite his age, would fit well. He is going to be a 4-5 mill player, but his style brings more consistency to the lineup.

"If you’re judging Crosby by that standard though, why not judge Toews by it? In all likelihood, it’s because Toews has come through an extraordinary portion of his career in which he’s won two Stanley Cups to go along with his pair of gold medals, while Crosby has just the pair of gold medals to go along with a series of embarrassing playoff exits."
I guess Sid was so bad this year they took his cup away from him.
That sucks. - canadianpenfan
Saw that too, kind of invalidates anything else that's written if you make that major omission. |

I just think its an interesting idea, a move like that changes the whole dynamic of the team, and potentially the identiy of the system that you play. If you get a new coach who knows what the style of Pens hockey is going to be.
You get one of the best dman in the game on your blue line, can sure make life easier for Fluery if thats the case. - DDM-Coga
When you consider our SHORTCOMINGS as an organization AT FORWARD; the fact we have NO in house candidates at forward that can CONTRIBUTE with our best being BEAU BENNETT, that is a major concern. We only scored THREE GOALS against the Rangers in our last three games of the series; we scored two goals or something against the Bruins in four games last year. We have a SCORING PROBLEM in the play-offs. Make that deal, we become the NASHVILLE PREDATORS all the sudden and its a BORING brand of hockey. I know the VALUE of Weber. I think he is GREAT. So, we are UP AGAINST THE CAP, NEED forwards that can score, but people THINK SHEA WEBER is the ultimate answer.
You can't go from one extreme to the other in a short period of time like that.

I think Moulson will be more than 4-5 M on the open market b/c he is a UFA. Someone will pay bigger to land him or he takes a discount to stay with the wild depending on what the Wild do with Heatly.

I'm pretty darn sure someone completely doesn't understand so I have to do that in a tactful way instead of my former way. I promised CPF to not rail against a certain type of poster .... My apologies. Blood pressure is fine. Thanks for the concern. |

BTW, the points you and some others have been making about personnel (or lack thereof) is more of an indictment of Shero than Bylsma, isn't it (I understand the perceived misuse of the roster with Despres, etc, but there were other significant holes with no good options) ? And yet Bylsma's exit seems like a foregone conclusion while Shero seems to have a good chance to stay. |

Shea Weber won't be going anywhere. Nashville had their hand forced by Philly and are paying him a crazy amount of money. He will be getting $13 Mill in signing bonuses alone for the next 4 years and then it goes down a little.
In short: The Preds have too much invested in him for the foreseeable future |

IMO the Preds would trade him for Malkin in a heartbeat (I'll leave it to the capgeeks to tell us why the trade doesn't work $ and term-wise) - that town is dying for some offensive hockey. Malkin would sell a lot of tickets. |

wed be stupid not to consider it
how often does malkin take a shift off, a game off?
shea weber take any nights off? i dont think so...but i could be wrong
there would probably have to be a little more to the deal one way or the other but theyd have to at least consider it...
oh and we need some that is scary, like someone who can play hockey but also fight, i know its been said a handful of times but still... - JLT168
Malkin for Weber just doesn't make any sense.
First, Nashville has no interest in moving Weber. They've said so at least a dozen times. The Nashville organization loves him & that isn't changing.
Second, Nashville has already paid out a large portion of Weber's salary in real dollars. I doubt, as a small market team, they would want to ship him out of town & pay a large part of Malkin's salary as well. They'd be paying far above the Cap value of Weber's contract in real dollars, which small market teams cannot always do due to financial limitations.
Third, Malkin has a NMC. If he doesn't want to move, he isn't moving.
Fourth, they Penguins and Nashville are bad trade partners. Both have young D, both need young F's.
If the Penguins are looking to trade Malkin (which they shouldn't, btw), they should look at St. Louis. The Blues could be looking for an elite talent at F & have F depth to trade. |

Even if we can trade for the rights of Babcock coaching here, the price to pay as in assets would be very very high.
Maybe some of Babcock has rubbed off on Tom Renney, his assistant. You don't have to pay anything to get him. Don't know though about if he is the answer. - Oneonta Penguin
