if letang plays like hes been. hes worth it. if not.

hes a 7 and a half million a year offensive defenseman who struggles on the powerplay. what?

Trade him to us... he'd automatically become our most efficient shootout option, if nothing else.

its hard for me to evaluate him as a player due to the injury. but that kind of highlights my worry. will he consistently have types of injuries that become chronic, and eventually blur the lines on what kind of player he can even be?

all in all, id just stay away. 4.5 mil wouldnt be a crushing amount on a one or two year deal. but at 4 more. it becomes a hell of a concern to me.

- stayinthefnnet

It really depends on the team. The deal was 5 years for 22.5M. 12M, which is more then half of the deal, is paid in the first 2 years. After that, his salary is 4.5M in year 3, and 3M each in years 4 and 5. A team looking to reach the Cap floor might have interest in that. But then the NMC comes into play.

true. cant totally discredit the just wanting to reach the cap floor notion. i would nope his NMC could balance out that avenue.

my evaluation was based on a team seeking to value its cap space, not superficially burn it.

Joe im going to reserve judgement and see what he will actually do. Hextall never struck me as a guy that would get pushed around. There were other teams clamoring to get him. I doubt he would have stayed if he wasnt going to have 100% complete autonomy.

I loved hextall as a player, holmgren too... But the almighty dollar is the tail that wags the dog.

I like coby, hes been asked to play over his head and a lot of times it shows... Put him back as a 3-4 defenseman and he'll be loved.

the only thing hextall wants more than a cup as a flyers player, which he'll never have, is a cup as flyers gm. he probably doesn't even count the la cup, like it didn't even happen. he has the resources, and the training. i believe he will get the job done here and his legacy will be complete.

God u have no idea how bad i believe he wants to. However will he follow a plan that works? Or will he carry on the tradition of snider puppeteering?

He's been dinged up in each of the last few seasons, so counting on a healthy Lecavalier may be a fool's errand.

People keep saying Nashville, but the Preds already have a lot of centers, both veterans, young NHLers & Prospects who are nearly ready. They're already using some out of position on the wings.

Of course Hextall did mention maybe taking a "lesser" player in a trade to get some cap room. Maybe that means a Gaustad for Lecavalier swap....just spitballing.

But the years, money, injuries and age have me wondering how moveable Lecavalier is, and that's before the NMC is even mentioned

- Jsaquella

I don't think, with him playing a 4th line and PP specialist role here, that the NMC is an issue. He'd move for the opportunity to play a different role.

I did say "relatively speaking".

If you put Newbury on a scoring line at the NHL, he might put up some points. If you play him on the 4th-line as a mucker, of course he won't.

Just like if you put a replacement-level player like Randy Jones in your top-4, he might be capable of scoring 30-points on a good team. Or start a replacement-level goalie like Leighton in the PO's, he might get you to within 2 wins of the Cup.

A lot of AHL guys are good enough to play in the show... they just haven't found their niche or haven't gotten the right break. There's older AHL vets finally graduating into the NHL every year -- Parenteau, Garbutt, MacArthur, Peverley, Santorelli, etc.

- Tomahawk

Those players evolved and get better to make it to the NHL. And they're outliers. Most older career AHL players that score at a high level in the AHL, stay there. Players like Peverly, and MacArthur, made to the NHL because they learned to be effective in other areas. Santorelli made it to the NHL when he was 24.
Newbury "might" put up some points. Good answer. Randy Jones for a short time, was a solid NHL defenseman. Leighton played well in net for the Flyers for a short time. Bottom line is that none of this points out that the difference between the AHL and the NHL is small.

i think thats whats best for him. hes not ahl eligible right?

i wouldnt rush him. just that type of defender. those bigger guys need more time to learn. he wont have the natural ability to make up for a lot of bad habits the way a ghost will.

This is kind of what I was thinking, w/r/t Vinny.

He's a proud guy and I can see him waiving for the right opportunity. We'll probably get rolled in the trade, because of Vinny's contract, but that's the bed that's been made, unfortunately.

Depending on how much his health this year affected his play (I think more than a little) and how the organization views Brayden Schenn (center or wing?), Vinny may not have much of a choice.
