Exactly. That's my point.

It's not a good way to actually get the player if you really want the player.

If either Smith or Krug want too much, I don't think Chiarelli would be scared to cut bait, like he did w/ Kessel.
- Tomahawk

Got a hell of a return for him as well. I think Krug will either be resigned or dealt before FA.

Probably not. They usually shoot for more obvious targets.

Yes they did but it was a good move. Can't be afraid to try and get better. Not every improvement is going to fall right into your lap.

Definitely not. It's harder than getting into a UFA bidding war. Best way is to acquire the rights via trade. Problem is, what do the Flyers have that they'd be willing to give up for Krug that fits a Boston need?

The offer sheet is a tool. Clarke had the forsight to try and get kessler before he becamse star. Vancuver matched. It wasn't for rediculous money.
- J35Bacher

Only problem is, the O.S. route has only worked once in the past 15+ years (since Gratton), and I'm betting that Edmonton wouldn't be handing Penner $20M+ if they had the chance again.

So watching Gaborik I am thinking he would be worth a risk for the top line. If its like a 1-2 year deal. maybe even 3 years.

Right. But my point is, if you don't overpay, the other team will match. They offered a slight overpayment for Kesler, and Vancouver matched immediately. You need to REALLY overpay, and then have the player agree, for the process to even have a chance to succeeding. Heck, look at the Ryan O'Reilly deal. That was about $2M more than Colorado offered, and they matched. Its a very, VERY low-percentage move that locks up some of your available space.

I thought stasny was restricted. Not that that has stopped homer in the past

Exactly. Edmonton ponied up some seriously silly money and it came back and bit them in the ass. But that's what it would take for any of these guys discussed. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it hurts your FA signing ability and is almost assured to fizzle.

He's a UFA. But he's making $6.6M now, he'll want at least that much in his next deal. Not sure how the Flyers make that work.

But in the meantime, you have wasted time and cap space waiting for a player that gets matched by the team he plays for.

I would love to try and get Grundbranson or Kulikov from Florida or Bogossian from Winnipeg

Well he's a center and all centers can play wing.

In all seriousness, if they sign stasny, I will go ape poop

Certainly would soften the blow of when they trade Schenn for Jared Cowen, aka The Other Luke Schenn.

Erik Gudbranson hasn't done much to wow me, and is probably one of the poorer 3rd overall picks in recent history. Kulikov would be nice if he could be had for relatively cheap (assuming he put those KHL rumors to bed). Bogosian is slowly becoming a reclamation project-type, but I'm not against it.

I still say we pillage Washington and go after Carlson/Alzner.

I agree with Washington Guys. I am just saying the Flyers have to get a little creative in looking at YOUNG reclomation types or low risk/high reward types. Everyone is so quick to say go get Niskanen but if you pay him then we aren't going to fix the offense. I just want them to be a little creative
