Anyone see the latest hockey news, take a guess on who they listed as the worst FA signing during the offseason.

Gary Bettman says a weaker Canadian dollar will put next year's salary cap at $69M or $70M. Had been projected at $71M.

That's still at least a 4.5 Million dollar bump. Minimal. Still think it hits 70 because of the outdoor games and really good reception to playoffs this year. Big bounce back after a lock out AND Winter Olympics.

So, Leafs have some decent cap to work with

AGREED Burn. I'm sure if Dougie read his post he would laff his killer ass off & think WTF is wrong with this guy? I don't claim to be a guy with insider scoops like this guy but I'd bet my week's pay that when Tim had pecific people in mind to be Leaf president, Dougie's name was even on the radar. Hmmmmm, Dougie was Tim's 1st choice over Shanny but Dougie said no cause he's bitter the Leafs traded Tlusty & Steen? INSAAAAAAAAAANE!!!!

On September 15, 2006, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that Gilmour would become their player development advisor.[11] Gilmour held that position with the Leafs until August 7, 2008, when the Maple Leafs announced that Gilmour would join the Toronto Marlies, the Leafs AHL affiliate, as an assistant coach under Marlies head coach Greg Gilbert.[12]

Gilmour was head of player development guys.... And he saw greatness in Steen and he saw a lame in Ron Wilson, who Steen would challenge and tell off regularly.

What made Gilmour great? His intensity.... What makes Steen great now? His intensity? What made Ron Wilson an overrated coach, he was lazy, never ran a practise and was aloof, sarcastic and thought because he was a video king, he knew it all. Gilmour saw him diminishing all the kids he had worked with, and knew he couldn't just be a company man and be witness to it.

The morale of this saga? No one who doesn't get inside a dressing room, has any real perspective into a sports franchise. All the players give very well crafted company pitch lines to the media, which are burned into their memories via the NHL and their agents.

So all you guys can do is develop your opinions from watching the games. That is half of it yes, the other half is within the dressing room and the MLSE boardrooms. And let me tell ya, Larry T runs the MLSE boardroom. IF you don't understand his dynamic, you don't understand the MLSE franchise very well at all. Its the business of hockey in Toronto. Not much more.

Coincidence that Steen was traded two months after Gilmour left to go to Kingston? Well only to someone who either doesn't have the inner sanctum to confer with or who cannot connect one dot to another.

As soon as Steen's greatest ally and supporter was gone, Wilson got his way and Steen was traded.

the morale of this story is to not try and act like you have insider info when you don't, because if you do then you end up looking foolish by telling people that a guy who had nothing to do with trades and player movement was making those decision... or that a team has finalized and is about to make an announcement about trade involving a draftpick they don't own.

Wow, you guys wouldn't know an insider obviously if you tripped over him. I am completely inside this silly organization in various layers and you know what? The more you find out about the upper stratus of the org, the less interested in the team you become.

This is a team that has drafted only four or five really good players in the last 25 years. Wendel Clark, Vincent Damphousse, Alexanders Steen, Tukku Rask and now Morgan Rielly.

They essentially blew it with the previous four, after stealing Sundin for Clark in the first place, they completely bungled things by trading back for Clark and losing all kinds of assets? Why? Because Clark was married to someone in MLSE and they wanted Clark and the wife back in Toronto. Who does that?

Damphousse, was traded for coal, Rask was traded for one of the worst goalies in Leaf history, and Steen was traded for a third liner.

Now they are beating on Kadri, who was coerced into putting on twenty pounds his first season with the Leafs by the joke a trainer that the Leafs employ.

And of course they are jerking around Jake Gardiner who many still consider to have even more physical potential, than even Rielly himself.

Its a poopshow, and now they hire Brendan Shanahan, a la Ken Dryden who never shed a drop of blood or sweat in a Leaf uniform.

However, if they suddenly develop a brain and keep R.C. for this year, it does indicate that Lieweke and Shannahan understand the necessity of getting a top two pick next year.
