According to Torts, we don't have the personnel for the 4th line either...

- hillbillydeluxe

And we need a powerplay coach because our PP sucks and could use some help and creativity.

Actually we do. The problem is those guys are currently penciled in on the 2nd line.
- fiveandagame

Hansen and Higgins are both 3rd line guys. Our 3rd line looked like a 3rd line. Our 4th line wasn't really a line, no identity. Our first line produced like a 3rd line for the 2nd half of the season.

We need a pp quarterback / pmd... some new skill...

How about a defence that could actually hit the net from the point. Let's start there and see what happens.

Can't argue with that.

Watching the defense this year, I often remembered a short clip of Bowness during a practice or something yelling at the d about making better passes, tape to tape was the desired outcome.... They played so sloppy this year, so nonchalant.

The pp seemed too stagnant. Hated seeing Henrik back on the blue line with 0% chance he would shoot or on the 1/2 wall with a shooting lane open and not even looking at the net. Often the cycle with nothing happening and the blue line open but no confidence they will get a shot through.

I think the Nucks should keep Torts, so next year they can suck even more and HOPE TO GOD we somehow land either 1 or 2.

IMO Torts needs to go, why wait for a new GM. Just let him walk now and move on. New GM can have his say on whoever he wants. I doubt that person would be Torts. Great interview last night but words and actions aren't lining up.

If Aquilini doesn't see the opportunity in bringing the AHL affiliate to Abbotsford, both from an economic as well as player development standpoint, he's less of a businessman than I thought. Maybe he really should just stick to real estate as there's only one way to build there: up.
- AlexF

He can build condos around the Abby complex and buy the land and building from the city. City recoups money over time in tax dollars. Problem solved.

The biggest downfall of this organization forever has been it's player development. If you look at most of the core today the reason why they were able to be good nhlers is because of the lockout years ago. Kesler, Burrows, Edler, Bieksa, etc., all played for Manitoba instead of the NHL. The same can be said for Getzlaf, Perry, all the other stars of the 2003 draft and most of the red wings.

Putting the farm team nearby where it can be supported and closely monitored should be an absolute no brainer. Who cares about travel. If they make it to the bigs, they're going to be travelling a lot with this team anyway. May as well get used to the sleep doctor now.

I'm surprised Linden didn't make Aquaman do his dirty work. If I'm a new GM coming in, I don't want to see Torts anywhere in the province when I arrive. If you are going to make a change, do it without delay.

He did sound like he had many of the answers and very rational. I liked when he said we have to move past the 2011 playoffs. Have to face reality and live in the present.

Similar goals but the paths are evidently different.

I think we had more there on the bench that could have been used differently. But the team wasn't built for his "hybrid" system.

Lets make him the GM then? It will be full out brawl during the draft day. Torts and Burkie going at it. Nonuts will be like Burkie's Chihuahua and MacT will be egging them on. It will be Epic. Best draft day ever.

Thanks for the link, interesting musings.

In regards to the Benn offer sheet, coulda, woulda, shoulda... I'd rather have him signed and have cap compliance to worry about than be in the position we are in today.

Almost like when Chicago won the cup and had to shed salary. You don't care 'cause you just won the cup.

Highly speculative on Elliotte's part regarding Benn. It's mind bottling that Botchford gets ripped for reporting what Thornton said to a media scrum but nobody blinks when James Duthie reports about MG and FA in Boston during the finals or Elliotte Friedman speculates about a Benn offer sheet with nothing to back it up.

No to making him be GM, though I do like his ability to speak so much sense when his actions indicate a totally different reality.

Just bring him to the draft and give him a long worn leash... maybe he won't be on the end of it by the end of the draft. Do the non playoff teams still send a rep to the thing tonight?

Have to think if it wasn't considered then they weren't doing their jobs.

What GM's don't covet other team's players, role players to stars, and think, "... what would it take?"

I am sure it was even considered on here.

Friedman calls it 30 thoughts but some of those are just one thought expanded upon... I Like the OV blurb and didn't know TC Carling was hired. What ev.

This!

As for the Comets in Abby I know 4 people who would purchase seasons tickets if they were going to be there. I'd consider it as well. Although I'm not able to yet there will be a decision of Seahawks tix or Canucks in the future. Seahawks + Jr Canucks would be a great option

The Flames are looking at Glens Falls, NY according to CBC. Utica, Glens Falls, Potato, Pahtahto. Flames had been looking at Utica last year as well so maybe there's a fit.

If not Abby, Seattle should be considered. If you believe Wikipedia, they tried last year but the NHL denied the request because there was the chance the Coyotes could move there. The other story was that the farm team would play out of Rogers but the NHL vetoed that b/c it was within the 50 mile territorial rule.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utica_Comets

So with this in mind and not territorial issues do you want the baby canucks in:
Abbotsford
Vancouver (rogers)
Seattle (key arena)

Carol, you're welcome for your next poll question.

So Linden fires Torts. What about the rest of the coaching staff? Does he, say, keep Gulutzen and fire the PP coach? Keep them all? Fire everyone?

My point is if the President begins making GM decisions where does it end? Best to just get the GM and let him choose what he wants to do otherwise he'll never be accountable.

Vancouver's current situation has more to do with Gillis being an idiot and the significant number of injuries this season, than it does with Torts and whatever issues he had.

Gillis has already taken the fall and you can't hang the injuries on Torts, that's why he'll be given the benefit of the doubt and be back next season.

It does make sense to have the farm team there, have to think there is more wheeling and dealing behind the scenes before the Comets are moved. Every lease is breakable. Just how much will it cost? Guess we will have to wait and see, may be inevitable that they are moved to Abby.

Would have thought the Canucks and Flames could have swapped farm team locations but egos or something go in the way.

Don't know how you can say Gillis was an idiot and ignore Torts' short comings.

You can't hang injuries on Torts or Gillis.

Torts won't be back, unless it is in some alternate universe. Torts sounded good yesterday but he also accepted much of the blame for not sticking with whatever system he used at the start of the year- he did not adjust. He overplayed the top 6 and the team fell apart.

The roster was largely unchanged from the previous year and performed worse. Who is to blame- GM, Coach or both?

Watching the Sedins play a dump-and-chase system and not even be allowed to pass their way out of the defensive half is criminal and entirely on the coach.

You clearly don't watch Canuck games.

I honestly think that Friedman and that Levoie(sp?) French guy were the only 2 guys who had any sources with the Canucks during the Gillis era.

Dallas likely would have matched IMO. But damn, Benn would have been a sexy addition.
