Management first needs to know if spezz is opened to signing a new deal..if he does the "vanek circle" and procrastinates then it's better to deal him and get somethin then get nothin - Trilla
this is what suggests to me that spezz knows he is on the block, and has perhaps conceded to mgnt he'd be ok with it, if to the "right" team. the mere fact that he needs to think about whether he wants here to be here long term reveals something or some sort of conversation, has happened behind closed doors. once i heard him not state he wanted to be a sen for life 100% i realized that the trade rumours are very, very, grounded in something real. we'l have to wait and see what happens. gonna be a heck of a summer!

if we trade spezz to good team (st louis, for ex), he will likely stay there. why jump from a contender to a mess of a team like toronto? spezza isnt getting any younger. i think he wants a cup sooner than later. the key is trading to him to a west coast team and getting him to accept the trade. i don't see this being a problem if we want to trade him to a contender. if he goes to a contender i say he re-signs there.
the key is getting someone in return who makes us a better hockey club long term. Adding a top 2 d fixes so many issues for us. long term ,we'd have something going like this:
ek- player x
weircioch-ceci
-cowen- one of our biny boys (classean/borocop).
it sets the clock back a bit, but does give us time to develop our d. i dont see us needing to add a forward right now, considering ryan re-signs.
that being said, if spezza stays then we definitely need a top 4 veteran player to kind of do what gonch did for us while the rest of the d troops grow more confident and accustomed to nhl style hockey. we also need to keep hemsky.
that being said, i really think spezz gets traded, and we continue to develop what we got (stone, hoff, puemple, weircioch, cowen, ceci, classean, boro) but hopefully add a true 2 d to play with ek. - sen_smile What happened to Methot and Phillips?

i think meth gets packaged. and this is more long term, so like 2-3 years. phillips is 7 d or retired by now.

Guys, please stop with this ridiculousness.
It's like debating what it would take to pry Crosby away from the pens.........it's NEVER gonna happen.
And that's a terrible deal for Ottawa - sensarmy_11
Their pick could be as low as 5th overall I believe.. Could be a strong nhl player. |

The thought is pretty sickening... But a year ago if I told you Clarke MacArthur would be a Senator you'd probably have frowned... Look at how that worked out now! - riceroni
I hated Phaneuf long before he was a Leaf... Always thought he was a brow-ridged douchebag. Him joining the Leafs was just icing on the cake |

Phaneuf's contract is AWFUL......it's so bad that it should be negative equity in any trade. Unless that pick is ekblad, I'd never do that deal |

Actually any team that misses the playoffs (save for NJ) who wins the lottery goes straight to #1... |

MacArthur is also not brutally overpaid. We prob wouldn't like him as much if he was making 6 mil for the next 7 years |

True, however very unlikely.
A deal between the two parties would never happen anyway. He's going west that's 100% certain. |

Our D is the weakest area we have...
Personally I'd like to see..
Karlsson-Edler/Ehrhoff
Methot-Weicioch
Cowen-Gryba
Phillips
Ceci spends the season in Bingo to get more NHL ready. I don't want him to suffer through a sophomore slump and lose confidence. Him and guys like Lazar need to pay their dues in the minors before coming to the NHL. Guys who should be coming up ahead of them are Da Costa, Stone, Hoffman, Pumpel, Classen, Boro (1 way deal next season)... |

im cool with sending ceci down, but doubt management does it ( since he is cost-friendly (read cheap) and manages to "stablize the backend" (read acc. to murray)
EDIT: he's basically our ideal type of dman (cheap and safe) |

Lindholm and Silfverberg for Spezza. Not bad.
But, if Anahiem is trying to wedge Spezza out of Ottawa you know that the Kings will also jump into the bidding. |

I'd rather Lindholm and Etem...
Silf is cool but he is not going to be anything more than a decent 2nd liner... Etem can be better than that... Silf is best buddies with EK though and EK revealed that trading away Silf and losing Alfie and Regin was hard on him... Maybe getting a couple of his old pals back would be a good thing... |

I would die to get Silf and Lindholm back for spezza.. Very doubtful though. I'd do Spezza and Gryba. Give them added toughness on the back end haha. |

I love the silfver surfer
but how dumb would it be if we got him back?
he was buddy-buddies with zib though so wouldn't be the worst thing

I think Silf is an easy 20 goal scorer, and with one of Milo or Hemmer leaving, we could use that. Spez def goes to one of LA, St. Loius, Ana, San Jose |

I need to say again, I am a big fan of Spezza. He has given Ottawa some wonderful hockey. My favorite play of all time (I was at the game), Spezza comes in on Souray, turns him inside out, tucks the puck high into the Montreal net, Ottawa wins the game.
But time has moved on. Ottawa has great young players. Building an elite contender means not worrying about next year as much as ensuring their great young prospects get playing time. |
