I wouldn't touch Phaneuf's contract with an 18 mile long pole.

Spezza will NEVER be traded to the leafs, unless they massively overpay

Why get another forward? I do think Tarasenko is a great player, but that's not our greatest need... Unless we trade Spezza and can't sign Hemsky and Michalek... then we will have lots of need for Vladamir...

i agree. if we trade spezza we will be taking a step back before we can move forward. getting a forward shouldnt be a concern. we have guys in the pipeline, and can always sign a forward ufa when the time comes. what is going to be hard, if not impossible, to come by is a top 2 dman.

The Leafs will be drafting 1st in 2014 because Shanahan has pictures of Bettman and Daley in compromising positions so it will have to be 2015 1st round pick and done deal.

He holds the cards in stopping a trade, not making one. Murray will not trade spezza to the leafs.

Sort of amazes me how many people think Spezza is that replaceable.. We need him, Ryan & Hemsky on board for this teams future success. Can we honestly come out on top of any Trade for Spezza ? I would think not.

I hate Phaneuf and Kadri... But kadri will be a great player someday and he also draws more penalties than he takes. That's something we need!

However if their is a deal that makes sense for this team going forward..then I would be open to the possibility.

Management first needs to know if spezz is opened to signing a new deal..if he does the "vanek circle" and procrastinates then it's better to deal him and get somethin then get nothin

Nobody said anyone was gonna step I and replace him right away. Most people are taking the "short term pain, long term gain" approach.

Spezza is still a great player, but there aren't many of those great years left. He's getting older, and has some very serious injuries. He's a UFA at the end of next year, and will likely be looking for a retirement deal. That's gonna be a lot of money and term to invest on a 31 year old center with back and knee problems.

Given all that, and the fact that Ottawa is deep down the middle......selling high on spezza now, and filling 2-3 other holes on this team, would probably benefit this yup team moving forward

if we trade spezz to good team (st louis, for ex), he will likely stay there. why jump from a contender to a mess of a team like toronto? spezza isnt getting any younger. i think he wants a cup sooner than later. the key is trading to him to a west coast team and getting him to accept the trade. i don't see this being a problem if we want to trade him to a contender. if he goes to a contender i say he re-signs there.
the key is getting someone in return who makes us a better hockey club long term. Adding a top 2 d fixes so many issues for us. long term ,we'd have something going like this:

ek- player x
weircioch-ceci
-cowen- one of our biny boys (classean/borocop).

it sets the clock back a bit, but does give us time to develop our d. i dont see us needing to add a forward right now, considering ryan re-signs.

that being said, if spezza stays then we definitely need a top 4 veteran player to kind of do what gonch did for us while the rest of the d troops grow more confident and accustomed to nhl style hockey. we also need to keep hemsky.

that being said, i really think spezz gets traded, and we continue to develop what we got (stone, hoff, puemple, weircioch, cowen, ceci, classean, boro) but hopefully add a true 2 d to play with ek.
