I didn't read it that way at all. If anything I took it as supporting Tortarella, meaning that preaching sound defensive hockey doesn't mean scoring has to be down.

That's how I heard it too. Sekeres noted that it was a relatively Torts-friendly answer.

I think it was pretty much an open-ended answer; can't see how anyone can lean one way or the other from a generic comment like that? "playing hockey the right way" WTF does that mean to Trevor.

It just keeps getting better!!
What a joke this franchise has become!

My goodness, this FA character is a real piece of work. They guy acts like a rich baby. Take some responsibility, cause we all know you were involved in it all, in some way.

Oh and send my defamation lawsuit papers to Moondawg, 1 Hockeybuzz Dr., Hockeybuzz, PA.

Booner's going to love this, he's lying before he's officially hired.

I'm laughing because Gillis pushed Linden into retirement, didnt neven give him time to think about it before announcing his retirement for him now Linden has replaced him as Pres.

People conveniently lost track of how many players Gillis stabbed in the back from day one.

When Trevor was talking about this, it sounded like he was either saying just because Torts' approach was defensive, it shouldn't necessarily mean it would hinder the offense or you can play smart defensive hockey without hindering the offense... as in Torts' system sucks and he should use another system that provides offense.

I as well. Perhaps change is really around the corner...

Fingers crossed.

Torts is currently the coach. Linden can't start his Presidency by throwing the the current coach under the bus. Linden will hire a GM and that GM will be responsible for deciding who coaches the team. The only GM I see keeping Torts is Feaster and I feel he is a long shot. Look at the entire rosters stats under Torts. He has to go.

I have a feeling Manny Malhotra is smiling today. He's employed by an NHL hockey team... Gillis isn't.

IMO, he has to be canned. This team won't respond to him next year.

And I'm not sure he can coach a different type of system, successfully.

Linden will let the GM decide who he has as coach. Torts is probably gonzo.

Seems like Linden wants to assess the situation first hand before jumping to conclusions. He has to have some ideas... What a difference from when Gillis took over.

I think Torts has to go too... They were saying on sportsnet that Torts got murdered in his exit interviews when he left the Rangers. I would love to hear what happens this time around.

More Aquilini: 'Trevor is the perfect person to run this hockey club. We're confident in his ability. He had our full trust and confidence.'

It sounds like FA is really trying to distance himself from the rumors that he is the one making hockey decisions.

Aqulini: (Gillis) hired Tortorella and I supported that. I have to take responsibility, and that's why we have a change in direction today

Bye Torts.

- fiveandagame

It's not a surprise to me. The words came out of Gillis' mouth that we were moving to a more defensive style when he was trading away offense for defense. Tortoiserella was hired by the same person.

Here's how it flipped and flopped. We have to play a more offensive game. We are going to play a more defensive style. We are going to move to a more offensive style. Which is it Gillis? FIRED.

I've updated the blog with a few notes from the press conference, including my thoughts on where Trev might go with his GM and coaching decisions.

Exactly. '94 is still my favorite year as a Canucks fan. It's impossible not to love that team.

Yeah, sounds like Linden wasn't a big fan of Gillis as a person.
