Quick question. In terms of Neil, Smith, Greening's ice time allocation, I was looking at the TOI/G for this year and last, and was surprised by the following:
Neil: 13:51 (in '12-13; 18th on team) down to 11:44 (in '13-14; 22nd on team)
Smith: 15:08 (in '12-13; 15th on team) up to 15:26 (in '13-14; 15th on team)
Greening: 14:43 (in '12-13; 17th on team) down to 13:47 (in 2013-14; 18th on team)
I was expecting an increase for these guys, but it doesn't show up. I agree wholeheartedly that they are being overused, but why do you think we were ok with it last year? - sensano
Probably because they all regressed big time and its showing |

They weren't being overused until recently, like right after the olympic break. Which is when we had our worst losing streak. |

I feel like they've been overused the entire season. I think you're correct, though, in saying that the problem has been exacerbated after the olympics. Also, I do agree that they have regressed. Part of me thinks this is even more frustrating because of the situational deployment of that line and the fact that Mac is sacrificing our top lines' minutes often. |

Well, for one thing, Michalek and Spezza being out for much of the season was gonna increase the ice-time of remaining veterans. |

Karlsson, Methot are no brainer stays.
Cowen will get another shot and hope that he succeeds.
I believe Ceci will also stick around, but in a lesser role- a 5/6 and get some PP time.
Phillips will be a #6/7 guy.
I think Claesson might have a chance at cracking the lineup next year, but it's probably unlikely unless he blows them out of the water at camp.
That leaves Wiercioch, Gryba, who are probably trade bait over the draft, if not will just be sent down.
This team is 100% bringing in another defenseman, and a veteran one. I'm gunning for Keith Yandle, but I doubt that happens without significant pieces going out the door the other way. If D. Boyle still has some legs and you can lure him out of San Jose, I'd love to see them try and bring him in and play a veteran role, kinda like Gonchar did. They really need some veteran stability from a guy who can still play.
Karlsson - Methot/Cowen
Boyle - Methot/Cowen
Phillips - Ceci
#7 - Gryba/Claesson/Weircioch - Jordo
i'd rather keep wiercioch then methot..........honestly, i think wiercioch is probably, RIGHT NOW, the 2nd best d-man on this team.
methot was great last year, but hasn't been the same player this year. |

because last year there were tons of guys hurt, and lots of rookies playing.....also, they didn't suck nearly as bad last year.
last season there was no ryan, hemsky, macarthur.....as well, spezza and stone missed significant time. it's easier to justify their playing time under those circumstances....they were basically our 2nd line last year. |

why the (frank) is kassian in for hoffman?
isn't this the time you want the young guys in......instead they play a useless caveman, who almost surely won't be back next year. |

i'd keep weircioch for three reasons 1/ i think he has more upside and is young 2/ sens are a long way from being a serious contender (not just making the playoffs, but competing for the cup)-- so i'd rather look long term than short term. 3/ putting meth in a package for the type of player we need (someone to play with ek) doesnt hurt this team in the long run. whereas, packaging weiricioch in a deal may.
i think pw will be sick in a couple years. besides, he can do what most dmen on our team cant do, which is get the puck out of our zone in one swift pass.. if we trade him i'll be seriously bummed.

Yep, put the goon in instead of letting a young guy develop in NHL minutes, then watch him get owned in a fight and sit in the box for 7 minutes.
Then ice him twice more this game for 1 minute per shift.
I don't even know anymore, I had real pride last year in the way this team was being run, this season has been a complete disaster, from the offseason onward.
Might as well go back to the days when we watched Marshall Johnston and Jacques Martin waste all of our talent by not supplementing them with depth and playing goofs all the time. |

Don't wanna see him go, but if he does I think the last few games can really help his value a little more |

Is that Neil I spy on the power play? It is? Dammit.
He provided a useful screen? Great, now Maclean will think it was a good idea. |
