In the scope of that draft, it wasn't that surprising -- that 1st-round was like a whos-who of busts.

It was basically the exact opposite of 2003.

Or maybe the mirror image of 2014?

I know. Outside of the Sedin's everyone basically missed. Zetterberg in the 7th round...

The thing is when a player gets drafted that late, and becomes a stud, the team that drafted him shouldn't really get that much credit. If they truly knew what said player was, there is no way in hell they would wait that long to draft him.

International players get an * on them. Some don't ever want to cross the pond, and I'm not sure what the NHL's agreement with Sweden was at the time.

Yep, which is why I often said you need some luck in the draft. When you look at a lot of top players that were selected in later rounds, and look to see who they drafted before in earlier picks. It's clear they had no idea what they were getting with that pick.

Well, Ekblad's a surefire can't miss HOF defenseman, that's a start.

Yeah that's a good point. Drafting a guy that may never have any intention of coming to North America has to be taken into consideration.

You definitely need luck. I think if a team hits on a first round pick 60-70% of the time, they are doing well.

Out of Morin, Hagg, Ghost, and Alt you would hope at least 2 pan out to be top four guys.

That's what makes the Morin pick so intriguing. I'm not gonna say he's a clear-cut "boom or bust" type of guy, but he's definitely a wild card. I honestly think he could hold down at least an AHL position right now, but he's got a long way to go (and lots of time to get there, which is fine) if he's going to become the guy they envisioned when they drafted him.

1/4 would be generous... and my money would be on Ghost.

I think Alt is the "safest" bet out of them. I saw him play, in the preseason, which has to be taken into consideration, and he looked like he belonged. I couldn't figure out who he was, and then I found out and was a bit shocked. I think he'll compete for a spot next year.

That might be more realistic. Out of that group of 4 how many do you think will eventually be NHL regulars?

6 out of 10... you're forgetting Hatcher and John Offensive Dynamo Slaney. Didn't they try to get Owen Nolan at some point, too?

He still haunts us.

Did that SchennBros dude get the 2 years suspension he feared...or something like that?

This place confuses me...
