The Kings won the cup in the same fashion that Canada won the Gold this Olympics. Timely, solid goaltending assisted by a suffocating forecheck and defensive play.

Quick was great, but the defense played amazing. I watched the Vancouver series and I can tell you that the Kings gave the Canucks virtually nothing inside. Almost every single shot was from the perimeter. The Canucks got very few quality scoring chances. When Quick needed to be great, he was. That being said, it certainly wasn't a one man show out there.

No single player can win a Cup. I honestly don't know why Flyers fans have this need to downplay the role that Carter and Richards had in the Kings winning the Cup. They were top players on a top team.

It doesn't make us the bitter anything because those two ARE NOT MISSED here in Philly. A combined 12 goals for two supposed star players is not a glaring stat. I'm glad you are impressed but not many are.

Of course, these numbers fail to take into account things like zone starts (Simmonds gets 57.3% of his non-neutral draws at even strength in the offensive zone), quality of competition (Simmonds is near the bottom of Flyer forwards in most estimates), and situational usage (Simmonds does not play the PK, which would significantly decrease his average).

Looking at just 5-on-5 scoring rates, Simmonds drops to 111th in the league, at 1.82 points per 60 minutes of ice time. This despite the advantage of playing relatively sheltered minutes and being used disproportionately in attacking situations.

All this is to say: the premise and conclusions of this blog, as others have said, are faulty. Doing the math correctly reveals what most of us intuitively know: Simmonds is a nice second liner who can put up a decent amount of points when used correctly. This is decided not an earth-shattering conclusion.

Thing is, if his ice time was bumped up that likely means more time against the opposition's top defenders. And that in turn would likely decrease his offensive efficiency.

So it's basically a curious "Oh well that's kind of interesting" stat but it doesn't really say all that much.

That averages to a ratio of one point for every 4.36 minutes on the ice.

Crosby has more points per minute than Simmonds...
