The problem with McGinn is that he is not a very good defensive winger. He's weak there. And there's no way I'd play him on the PP. Limited minutes at most, and no special teams play. - MJL

I agree. I think McGinn is better than both of those guys. Is he really that bad defensively that they're scared to put him on the ice over guys like Rosehill or VDV? - PhillySportsGuy
Not imo he's not. Not sure why they are adverse to playing him on the 4th line. That's what he is at the NHL level in all probability. |

If they put McGinn in the lineup I don't think they miss a beat. If they waste a spot with Rosehill or Vande Velde they are essentially playing with 11 forwards as neither of those guys are NHL players. - PLindbergh31
Both of those players are are capable of playing a 4th line role. And if neither of those players are NHL players, then neither is McGinn.

Not really, but they won't be playing VDV on the 3rd line. |

I just don't understand why they play Rosehill or VDV over him. I haven't seen anything from either of those guys. McGinn has done some good things with the Flyers and the Phantoms.
I think they're cutting off their nose to spite their face. They act like VDV and Rosehill or some defensive specialists or something. |

whoever they use to fill in for Downie will be getting a lot less minutes a game, the 12th forward getting 5 minutes or less
Berube will shorten the bench, and key guys will be asked to play more minutes
I think it will catch up to them if Downie misses a bunch of games |

I thought the points would eventually come for him and I had a feeling they'd start playing better. I was afraid they'd have the same thing as last year happen where they fall too far behind early on. I've been blown away by this turnaround though.
The overall commitment to defense and battling along the boards has made this a much better team. - PhillySportsGuy
IMO it comes down to the fact that they are playing as a team and their hearts are in it. Getting Mac has really seemed to help Schenn, he seems to have settled down. For me the most frustrating thing was they weren't playing as a team. I felt they were always a playoff team, but didn't think they were a contender. With the way they are playing now, if they can keep it up they could go far.
This team must have just flat out quit on hot Lava and they were tuned out completely. It has taken time for them to adjust to Chief. It's almost like they hated being on the ice for Lava, because this sure isn't the same team that started this year. |

I don't see why they are. Neither Rosehill or VDV have played in the lineup for an extended time. There's a big difference between having a player on the roster as a 13th forward for a game here and there, versus a long term situation. No reason to have McGinn up with the team as a healthy scratch most games.
Now if Downie is out long term, that is a different situation. And we'll see what they choose to do.

They knew as a team that they couldn't play the way that Laviolette wanted them to play. When you don't believe something can be done, you don't do it very well.

I agree totally about playing as a team. They seem to know exactly where each other are at all times. Berube seems to have drilled these things into their heads. Their positioning is 10000000 times better than it was before. Under Lava, when they won board battles they'd have no outlet or they'd win the puck to the wrong side of their help. |

Yes, this team is much better and harder to play against when they are rolling four lines. I think McGinn can play the fourth line. I'd rather have Downie in there. |
